Life here on earth came to an end for Sister Clara Beatrice
Cartwright on Monday, November 8, 2021, at 4:30 p.m. at the
University of Maryland Charles Regional Medical Center in La Plata,
Maryland.
Clara Beatrice Garrett Cartwright was born April 5, 1930, to the late
Robert (Bob) Garrett and Nealie Davis Garrett. She was the
youngest of twelve siblings.
On December 6, 1947, she fell in love and married Sam Cartwright.
They had no biological children but they raised a niece from nine
months old to an adult. So Dorothy Jean GarrettJefferson is their
beloved daughter whom they loved and cherished as much as she
loved and cherished them.
Clara graduated from Chireno High School in Chireno, Texas May
27, 1949.
Clara was adventurous and loved to experience new things. She
loved to travel and traveled to many states. She also traveled on a
cruise to Mexico. She also enjoyed driving. Clara taught her
grandchildren and several other family members how to drive. Her
grandson Jawara got his lead foot from her.
She lived in several places around the state of Texas and she joined
a church in each place that she lived. She moved to Waldorf,
Maryland in 1989 and joined Mt.Ennon Baptist Church. In 2007 she

moved back to Texas and she joined True Vine Baptist Church in
San Augustine, Texas. For health reasons she moved back to
Maryland in 2019 and lived with her daughter and son-in-law. She
rejoined Mt. Ennon Baptist Church where she faithfully attended
church services in person and online.
Clara loved God and she was active in each church where she was a
member. She was a choir member, a missionary worker, a Sunday
School student and teacher, and a Vacation Bible School student
and teacher. In Texas, she was the piano player for several
churches. Clara loved to read her Bible and Daily Word, and she
loved to listen to Gospel Music, even up to the day that she departed
this life.
Clara was a professional, diligent, and dedicated worker. She had
several jobs in her lifetime: Poultry Worker, House Keeper, Short
Order Cook, and Deli Manager but most of her work experience was
in Retail. She worked for Weiner’s, Sakowitz, Foley’s, Hecht’s,
Macy’s J. C. Penney’s, and Burlington. She was loved and revered
by the staff and customers. She received the Diamond Star award

In the last years of her life she enjoyed watching Mt. Ennon Baptist
Church and other churches’ services on YouTube all day on
Sundays, sitting on the porch in the sunshine daily, going for walks
and rides with her daughter, watching westerns, and game shows
with her daughter, son-in-law, and grandchildren.
Clara loved her family and friends. She would talk to some family
members and friends each day or once a week. She was the glue
that made sure the family stayed in touch with each other. She loved
her nieces and nephews from the youngest to the oldest as if they
wereher own. They all loved her and she was very special and dear

to all of them. She also adored her grandchildren andit was the high
point of her day when they came to visit.
Clara had a quiet spirit but she was witty and had a sense of humor.

to love her.

In the years that followed, Mr. Campbell served Shelby County industry in a number of ways.  He was a bank teller at the State Guaranty Bond Bank, a livestock inspector, and a rancher.

In 1956, Mr. Campbell entered the butane and appliance business in partnership with Alton Foundation when they founded Farmer’s Gas Butane Company.  In addition, he owned and operated Farmer’s Natural Gas Company from 1962 to 1980 when he donated the system to Stephen F. Austin State University.

In 1960, Mr. Campbell went into partnership with the Craycraft Brothers of Mount Enterprise to purchase the Center Auction Barn.  For 22 years, the partnership continued until 1982 when Mr. Campbell bought out his partners and became sole owner.

He was a member of the Board of Directors and past president of the Sabine River Authority of Texas where he met life long friends.

After more than 35 years leading Shelby County Savings Association/Shelby Savings Bank, as the driving force behind the creation of Shelby County Savings Association, then as chairman of the board, and the last few years as chairman emeritus.  Mr. Campbell retired from the bank’s board.

In 1973, he started General Shelters of Texas.  It is still in operation today.  He always said, “If you tell a customer you are going to do it, you damn sure better!”

Mr. Campbell’s devotion to his community and his contributions to East Texas developed from his love of helping people.  He is involved and contributes to Ducks Unlimited, Stephen F. Austin State University, the Roughrider Scholarships, and the local 4-H and FFA programs.

He was instrumental in establishing Center’s off-campus extension of Panola College.  He is also a past president of the Center Rotary Club where he received the Paul Harris Fellow award.

He served as president of the Alumni Association in 1980-1981 at Stephen F. Austin State University.  He was also a vice president and a member of the association board of directors.  He was inducted into the Hall of Fame in 2012.  In 2012, the James Campbell Plaza was dedicated in honor of Mr. Campbell.

The Texas Industrial Development Council awarded him the Volunteer Industrial Developer Award Citation for leadership and personal contribution to the development of the economy in his community and in Texas.  The Shelby County Chamber of Commerce recognized him with the distinguished citizen award, its highest honor.

Above all, James Campbell loved his family and friends.  He always asked, “How can I help you? Can I do anything for you?”  He was a loving, caring husband, father, grandfather, and uncle who went out of his way to take care of his family in the most special ways.

Gene Walker

Gene Walker passed away November 11, 2021, at the age of 87.

Funeral service will be held at 3:00 p.m., Sunday, November 14, 2021, at First Baptist Church in Center with Bro. Josh Samford officiating, assisted by David Chadwick.

Gene was born, raised, worked, and retired in Center, Texas.  He attended and graduated from Center High School in 1950 and went on to attend and graduate from The University of Texas with a BBA in 1954.  Following his high school graduation, he served as a bookkeeper at East Texas Poultry Plant since he couldn’t get a job with companies due to the draft status of A-1.  In 1954 he worked as a court reporter after a two year stay in the US Army, serving as secretary to the General of EUCOM (United States European Command).  In 1958, Gene married Dolores Warr, and they had two children, Steve and Laura Walker.

As a man of God and an active member of his community, he served in many roles where he was able to touch the lives of others.  Gene was an active member of First Baptist Church in Center for over 50 years where he was an ordained deacon, sang in the choir, taught Sunday School classes and participated in multiple summer trips with the youth group.  Gene was an influential presence in the Shelby County 4-H drill team, helping lead the drill team to 10 state titles while he served as Drill Master and eventually went on to serve on the State Leadership Board.  Gene also served as Treasurer for the Center Noon Lions Club for many years and was awarded the Distinguished Service Award by Center Chamber of Commerce.

In addition to being an essential part of the community, Gene was a loving husband, uncle, father and grandfather.  His greatest joy was spending time with his grandchildren, Caitlin and Lane.  They will always remember him, as a loving, caring man who went out of his way to make sure they were taken care of in all ways imaginable- from “secretly” slipping them money to making special dishes at supper just for them and even tolerating a dog at the dinner table!  Caitlin will miss the early morning talks with her Papaw as he served the thinnest, crispiest grilled cheeses and made sure her milk glass stayed full.  Lane will forever remember sitting on the swing in the front yard, playing their personal game where they counted the trucks and cars that passed by on the highway.

Gene will be greatly missed by all who had the benefit to know him.

Left behind to cherish his memories is his daughter, Laura Walker of Center; son, Steve Walker and wife Catherine of Buna; grandchildren, Caitlin Stevens and husband Bart and Lane Walker; nieces, Linda Mason and husband Wayne and Terri Bryan; brother-in-law, Gaylon Warr.

Preceded in death by his wife, Dolores Ann Walker; parents, Kaufman Elijah “Cap” Walker and Ruby Maurine Humphries Walker; sister, Marie Robinson; niece, Theresa Robinson; and brother-in-law, Ken Warr and wife Jean.

Pallbearers will be Phil Worsham, Burton Brown, Bryan Wages, Ken Muckelroy, Clint Porterfield, Dennis Mince, Steve Jeans, and John Black.  Honorary pallbearers will be McNeil Moore, Jack Nichols, Bennie Owens, Harold Hansen, Moffett Sunday School Class (Vance Green).

A special thanks to Ruby Gaddis, Pine Grove Staff, and the staff of Affinity Hospice for their compassionate care.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Katherine Pinkston Scholarship Fund in memory of Gene Walker.

He met Glenda Beth Spann at the Dairy Mart in San Augustine, and they married in 1968. Mr. Bennett was an employee at the Ray Craft plant in San Augustine for many years, and was a current employee of General Shelters in Center. He loved the outdoors, especially spending time fishing on the Sabine river, and believed almost anything could be fixed with a little duct tape, glue, bailing wire, and some common sense. Pauline Oates

Pauline Oates, 86, of Nacogdoches, Tx passed away on October 28, 2021. She was born on October 2, 1935 in Shelby County to the late Reeves and Esther Mae Holt.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 pm on Friday, November 5, 2021 at Mangum Funeral Home in Center, Texas.

Visitation will be held at 1:00 pm prior to the service on Friday, November 5, 2021 at Mangum Funeral Home in Center, Texas.

Mrs. Pauline asks that you take a walk with her in her journey through her life.  She was a wife and mother, a job that she loved more than all others. She loved antiques and would often restore them.  Pauline was an active member of the Order of the Eastern Star #722 in Athens, Texas.  She was also a member of The Daughters of the Republic of Texas.  Pauline had many jobs that she was proud of.  She was a manager of Kenwin Department store in Athens. She worked as Director of Housekeeping for The Spanish Trace Inn.  Pauline was Deputy Tax Assessor and Collector in Real County, Texas for a time.  She was co-owner of White’s Auto Store in San Augustine.  She was also a manager at Vassarett Manufacturing Company.  Pauline received a certificate from the State of Texas Department of Health for her outstanding work she did in nursing homes throughout the county.  She prided herself on taking care of her family and helping Harold out with things around the house and land that they owned.  Pauline would feed cattle, take care of baby chickens, and anything else that needed to be done.  Life was never dull.  Every time there was a need, God showed her the place and direction to go and gave her the confidence to do the job.  Whether it was using a hammer to build something, shoot a gun, or build a fence, she could do it all.  She would do the job and then say, “All is well.”

Pauline is survived by her children, Stephen Reeves Oates and wife, DuJuana “Susie”, and Terrie Jean McAden; grandchildren, Rachel D’Lyn Oates Clark and husband, Cliff, and Joshua Chase McAden and fiancé, Wendy Serrano; great-grandchild, Callyn Reese Clark; and brother-in-law, Daryl Wade Oates and wife, Ann.

She is preceded in death by husband, Harold Donece Oates; father, Reeves Holt; mother, Esther Mae Dockens Danley; brothers, Murvel Holt and Tommy Lynn Holt; and sisters, Billie Jean Holt Hinton and Bonnie Duncan.

Mangum Funeral Home, Center, is in charge of arrangements.

Maxie Chumley

Maxie Chumley was born on October 13, 1947 in Newton, Texas, the 9th of 12 children born to Ruben Augustus and Annie Lena Crawford Amburn.  Maxie learned the ways of life from her parents and was specifically taught how to take care of herself, work for what she wanted, love people and most importantly, to serve her Savior, Jesus Christ.  Maxie was a mother, sister, friend, and servant to those she loved the most.  She helped her neighbors and the communities that she so adored.  She was BIGGER THAN LIFE.  Everyone who knew her would testify to her boldness and the love she had for her closest friends.  No one ever wondered how Maxie stood on any subject.  She was upfront with her thoughts and feelings.  She was who she was and she never made apologies for that.  She was proud of what she had accomplished in her life and her ability to be what she wanted to be.

Maxie was dedicated to her beloved church of Neuville Baptist Church where she served and told everyone “There is no place like Neuville Baptist Church!”  She attended Neuville Baptist where she was in charge of the kitchen and sang in the choir.  Maxie was a very talented vocalist and music was very important to her.  She was widely known for singing Dolly Partin’s “Coat of Many Colors”.  This song defined Maxie’s life.  She had many parts of herself that when put together, made a complete person.  Maxie was petite but boisterous.  Each of her traits made her who she was.  Her “coat of many colors” shown in everything she worked on.  However, in the midst of her colors, was a rhinestone…Maxie was the rhinestone.

She loved to cook and her cooking was old fashioned.  No one….and that is the truth….could make chicken and dumplings like Maxie.  The kitchen at church, no matter what it was used for, always had her dumplings.  And on the dessert table was all her beautiful, delicious pies.  Her church family will have to get use to the tea glass being less full, but in return, the Lord’s table will be much sweeter and the heavenly choir will be louder.

Maxie was larger than life and helped out wherever she could.  Her devotion to Christ led to being devoted to mankind as well.  She found great pride in helping each year at the San Augustine “Night of the Stars”.  Maxie always attended functions dressed to perfection with her “blingy” jewelry and adornments and the absolute best and most beautiful clothes.  She was stylish and took pride in looking her best.  The fundraiser brought her to another level when she was able to dress up like the celebrities and sing their songs.  Maxie was a celebrity of her own and will be missed throughout the communities but her star will forever shine bright in the memories of those who knew her and loved her most.

The family would like to offer a special thank you to Bridget Hughes and the staff at Pine Grove Nursing Home, and Melanie, Kari and Teresa at Texas Hospice for their special care of Maxie.

Maxie is survived by her daughters, Shonia Putman and husband, Keith, Lesa Robertson and husband, Randy, and Tammie Jacobs and husband, Scott; sisters, Dixie Cucco and Jane Robins and husband, Kelly; grandchildren, Adam Copelin and wife, Jennifer, Jessica Greer and husband, BJ, Cade Copelin, Josh Windham and wife, Joni, Jennifer Sims and husband, Nick, John Parks and wife, Briget, Kasie Cacace and husband, Tony, Colton Norton and wife, Brittany, Caleb Norton, RT Jacobs, Shelby Jacobs, Jessica Jacobs, Keith Putman and wife, Angie, Kandace Meisch and husband, Victor, Amanda Linthicum, Kevin Putman, Matthew Putman and wife, Mariah, Ginger Garrett and husband, Luke, and Toby Robertson; great-grandchildren, Savannah Spann, Jorden Bollier, Cassidy Greer, Levi Greer, Avery Windham, Tyson Windham, Molly Windham, Kaden Sims, Preslee Sims, Kingston Parks, Kellon Parks, Stetson Waller, Gatlyn Caldwell, Ally Garrett, Lauren Hall and husband, Jeremy, Whitney Garrett, Savannah Lewis and husband, Travis, Lexi Robertson, Mikayla Putman, Gavin Putman, Ella Putman, Kaylea Webb, Kyndal Webb, Kreed Meisch, Kaydence Linthicum, Kamden Putman, Evelyn Putman, Weston Putman, Kinley Putman, Emma Putman, and Waylon Putman; sisters-in-law, Shirley Amburn, Jeanie Amburn, Barbara Amburn, Kathy Haley and husband, Richard, and Dianne Chumley; brothers-in-law, Ray Hardy and Earl Chumley and wife, Verna; and special loved ones, Sue Dendy, Herbie Smith, Tristan, Jaysen, and Jaxson.
