Aimee Denise (Garrett) Shutter, age 53, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away, February 27, 2025, in San Augustine County, Texas.

She was born February 22, 1972, in Lufkin, Texas, to parents Ira Wayne Garrett and Martha (Fitzgerald) Garrett. Aimee, a lifelong area resident, was a graduate of Broaddus High School and a member of the Church of Christ.

Her survivors include her husband, Jerry Baird Shutter of San Augustine, Texas; her mother, Martha Fitzgerald Garrett of San Augustine, Texas; sister and brother-in-law, Mandy and Rodger Stewart of San Augustine, Texas; brother and sister-in-law, Tim and Charnette Garrett of Chireno, Texas; her puppy, Lulu; and a host of nieces, nephews, and other relatives.

She was preceded in death by her father, Ira Wayne Garrett; and a brother, James Ray Garrett. 

A graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m. Friday, February 28, 2025, at Thomas Cemetery, located on County Road 474 in San Augustine County, Texas, Charlie Franks and Stephen Wiggins officiating.

George Edward Roe

George Edward Roe, 87, of Center, passed away Tuesday, February 25, 2025, in Center.
Funeral service will be held at 4:00 p.m., Saturday, March 1, 2025, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center
with visitation beginning at 2:00 p.m. Bro. Doyce Whitten and Bro. Sam Roe Jr. will officiate. Military honors
graveside service will follow at Old Home Cemetery in Shelby County.
Born June 1, 1937, in the Paxton Community of Shelby County, George is the son of Sam Roe and Ester Barton
Roe. He retired from the United States Military, serving first in the Marine Corps and later in the Army. George
was actively involved in his community. He assisted with the Tenaha Boosters and was a past Fire Chief of West
Shelby Volunteer Fire Department. George was a member of the Masonic Lodge and White Rock Missionary
Baptist Church in Center, where he served as a deacon.
He is survived by his children, Charles Roe and wife Cecelia, Cheryl Roe, and Andrea Peacock and husband
Courtland; grandchildren, Parker Roe, Nicholas Peacock, Alexander Peacock, Aaron Peacock, and Olivia Roe;
great grandchildren, Jordan Peacock and Tarah Tracy; brothers, William Roe Sr. and Sam Roe Jr.; and sister,
Rachel Whitten and husband Doyce.
Preceded in death by his wife, Linda Roe; parents, Sam Roe and Ester Barton Roe; and sister, Linda Murray.

Laura Fisher Ross

Laura Fisher Ross of Silas Community peacefully passed away Saturday, February 22, 2025 at the Garrison Nursing Home.

Laura and her husband J.W. moved to Silas in 1965 when he worked for Texaco. They both became active members of the community.

She served as Worthy Matron of Eastern Star at Newburn Lodge. She enjoyed leading their annual chicken and dressing dinner for many years to raise funds for their numerous charitable projects. 

Laura was affectionately known as "Granny" to all the family including her six grandchildren, nine great grandchildren, and two great great grandchildren.

She is survived by children Doris Griffith, of Houston, Roberta Parker-Hall and husband Larry of Pasadena, Jim and wife Linda of Hallsville.

A Celebration of Life will be held later. Internment will be at Mt. Olive Cemetery.

Deborah (Debbie) Kennon Welch

Deborah (Debbie) Kennon Welch, 61, of Shelbyville, Texas, passed away on
February 20, 2025, in Shreveport, Louisiana. She was born on June 17, 1963, in
Center, Texas, to Drue Edwin Kennon Sr. and Edna Gay (Sigler) Kennon. 
Funeral service will be held at Mangum Funeral Home, on Sunday, February 23,
2025, at 2 PM with Bro. Bobby Warr officiating. Interment will follow at Clever
Creek Cemetery.
Visitation will be held on Saturday, February 22, 2025, from 5-7 PM at Mangum
Funeral Home.
Those who were fortunate to know Debbie, know that she exemplified the word
“kindness.” Much of this was shown through many years working with students,
both as an English teacher in the classroom and as a school librarian. Debbie
also blessed many with the message of the Gospel through her beautiful voice by
participating for many years with the choir at First Baptist Church in Center, TX. 
But, most notable of all, Debbie built a wonderful life with her husband Gordon.
Married on October 24, 1987, at Clever Creek Baptist Church, they loved each
other to the fullest for thirty-five years. During that time, they welcomed a
daughter, Lanie. Throughout her entire life as a mother, Debbie sought to invest
in every moment possible and poured as much love and wisdom as possible into
her daughter. 
After welcoming her son-in-law, Ryan, into the family, she also welcomed a
granddaughter in the fall of 2023. Debbie loved Liza dearly, and looked forward
to every moment she could see her, always sharing photos with anyone who was
willing to hear about her precious granddaughter. 
She is survived by her daughter, Lanie Welch Fitzgerald and Ryan of Levelland,
TX.

Jimmy “Bo” Norris Jones, 73, of Center, Texas, passed away on February 20, 2025, in Tyler, Texas. He was born on August 16, 1951, to the late Eugene Jones and Lela (Askew) Jones.
Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Saturday, February 22, 2025, at
Mangum Funeral Home, with Bro. Bobby Warr officiating. Interment will
follow at Buckner Cemetery, Center, Texas.
Visitation will be held prior to the service on February 22, 2025, beginning

Jimmy was born and raised in Shelby County, He attended Center Schools.
Jimmy worked over 25 years at Center Plywood earning his 25yr award.
Jimmy loved fishing while he was able and taking care of his dogs. Later in
life he enjoyed drawing. He would spend hours creating artwork.

Clara Carolyn Cross Hooker

Clara Carolyn Cross Hooker, a lifelong resident of Tenaha, Texas, was born on November 21, 1935, to
Maurine Hairgrove Cross and Buel William Cross. She was the beloved wife of the late Charles Garrison Hooker
for 61 years and a loving mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. 
Our Lord and Savior called Carolyn home on Thursday, February 20, 2025, surrounded by her loving children,
Jennifer and Jeff, and devoted caregivers, Laverne Tutt and Tiffany Daniels. Carolyn is survived by her children:
Jennifer Hooker Cumbie and husband Jim, and Jeffrey Hooker and wife Dannett. She was a proud grandmother
to six grandchildren: Claire Cumbie Brody and husband Parker, Trey Cumbie, Camille Cumbie, Kori Hooker Belrose
and husband Grant, Kelsi Hooker, and Garrett Hooker. Carolyn also cherished her five great-grandchildren: Eda
James Brody, Abel Royal Brody, McArthur Charles Brody, Zoey Faith Belrose, and Carter Lauren Belrose. 
Carolyn’s unwavering priorities of family, faith, and community shined brightly throughout her life. Over the
years, she jumped at every chance to help out with her six grandchildren and their activities. Carolyn enjoyed
organizing family get-togethers, reunions, school, community, and homecoming activities, which brought her the
greatest joy. 
Carolyn displayed immense generosity in her early teaching days, often helping students with school supplies and
food for their families. This act of kindness made her a beloved educator and principal at Tenaha ISD, where she
served for many years. She received the "Teacher of the Year" award early in her career and was instrumental in
improving the special education department and developing the Gifted & Talented program. Carolyn served as
the elementary principal for almost 10 years.  
Carolyn was involved in numerous organizations, including the Tennessee 4H Club, the Texas Association of
Administrators, the Texas Elementary Principals Association, the Community Education Association, Phi Delta
Kappa, and the Delta Kappa Gamma Society International, where she held various leadership positions. 
After retiring from 40 years in public school education, Carolyn continued to impact children's lives. She was
employed by Panola College as an educator and an adjunct professor at Stephen F. Austin State University,
supervising student teachers. Carolyn also served nine years on the Tenaha ISD school board, helping guide and
implement decisions to improve the school system. 
In 2006, she was inducted into the Tenaha Tiger Hall of Honor for her many years of service to Tenaha education
and the community. 
Carolyn loved her church family and was a member of First Baptist, Tenaha, for over 80 years. She taught an
Adult Ladies Sunday School class, sang in the church choir, and volunteered for various church activities and
committees, including WMU, VBS, Hospitality, Church Council, and her sewing circle.  
Carolyn’s legacy of love, dedication, and service to her family, church, and community will be remembered and
cherished by all who knew her. She is survived by her brother, Roland Cross, and sister-in-law, Dianne Cross, as
well as many loving caregivers, nieces, nephews, and special family members and friends. 
Family Pallbearers will be Trey Cumbie, Garrett Hooker, Parker Brody, Grant Belrose, David DePriest, Jason Blair,
Chad Smith, and Brad Vickery. Honorary Pallbearers will be Roland Cross, Lee Howard, Chip Roberson, and Keith
Martin.

Alfonso "Poppy" Sanchez

Mr. Alfonso "Poppy" Sanchez, age 69, of Broaddus, Texas, passed away Wednesday, February 19, 2025, at Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin, Texas.

Known as "Poppy" by most family and friends, he was born April 12, 1955, in Mexico to parents Josephine (Hernandez) and Feliz Navidad Sanchez. He had lived in East Texas for most of his life and worked in concrete construction for several years. Poppy enjoyed building things with his wood working talents. He had a great love of music and played many instruments, especially the guitar. He was part of the church family at First Baptist Church, Broaddus.

His survivors include his wife, Priscilla Sanders of Broaddus, Texas; children, Caleb Brett Davis of Ohio, Audrey Courtney and husband Jordan of Zavalla, Texas, Ryan Blanks of Broaddus, Texas, Olivia Blanks of Broaddus, Texas, Brittany Bryan of Bronson, Texas, Tiffany Clements of Gipson, Louisiana, and Geri Thomas and husband Justin of Bronson, Texas; grandchildren, Ava Courtney, Jackson Courtney, Ridley Clements, Liyla Clements, Aspen Dickerson, Brayden Helton, Liam Nix, Asher Nix, Sophia Davis, and Elizabeth Gilham; and a host of brothers, sisters, and other family members.

A Celebration of Life service is being planned. Times and details will be announced later.

David "Sonny" Ray Coleman

David “Sonny” Ray Coleman went to be with his Lord February 16, 2025.

Sonny was born March 12, 1951, in Houston Texas to Marlin Ray and Helen Maybel Coleman. Sonny was a longtime resident of Madison County. Sonny had a career as a plumber and a long-haul truck driver. He was a loving and doting father and grandfather to his 3 children, 9 grandchildren, and 1 great-grandson.

He had a sense of adventure; in his early life he enjoyed going to the diamond mines and driving motorcycles. He loved watching John Wayne movies and listing to Creedence Clearwater Revival and old country music. He spent time in Korea in the U.S. Army as an artillery man.

Sonny had a personal relationship with Jesus his Lord and tried to make sure those he loved did too.

Sonny was preceded in death by his parents; his brothers, Randell Luther Coleman, Thomas William Coleman, and Robert Coleman and wife Reba.

He is survived by his children, David “Cam” Clinton Coleman and wife Kathy of Trinity, Texas, Shasta Rey Coleman of Nacogdoches, Texas, and Abby Lynn Coleman and husband Michael Moore of Nacogdoches, Texas; his siblings, Lynda Faye Churchwell and husband Henry of Madisonville, Texas, Jay C. Gladys Jewel Smith Galloway

Mrs. Gladys Jewel Smith Galloway, age 95, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Friday, February 14, 2025, at Colonial Pines Care Center.

She was born September 11, 1929, in San Augustine to parents Pink and Susie (Cooper) Smith and had been a longtime area resident. She was a loving wife, mother, and grandmother as the matriarch of their family. Mrs. Galloway was a member of the Full Gospel Church and was a faithful pastor's wife always standing with her husband, the late Rev. James Galloway, who was the founding pastor of Bronson Revival Center.

Her survivors include her daughter, Shirley Blue of San Augustine; a son-in-law, Pat Jacks of Pineland; a sister-in-law, Yvonne Smith; grandchildren, Sherry and Jeff Harding, Johnnie and Linda Hodge, John and Jeannie Blue, Patrick Jacks, Sabrina and Raymond Worthy, and James and Kelly Lakey; 15 great-grandchildren; and 20 great-great-grandchildren.

She was preceded in death by her parents, Pink and Susie Smith; her husband, Rev. James Galloway; daughters, Nelda Faye Galloway, Peggy Lakey, and Sharon Jacks; sisters, Hazel Rash and Atrail Dohmann; brothers, Bobby Joe Smith, Roy Smith, J.W. Mr. Landon Hardy, age 48, of San Augustine, Texas, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2025, in Fort Worth, Texas.

Visitation is scheduled 5:00 to 8:00 p.m. Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Wyman Roberts Funeral Home, located at 316 W. Columbia Street in San Augustine.

Funeral services are set for 2:00 p.m. Sunday, February 16, 2025, at the Wyman Roberts Memorial Chapel. Interment will follow Liberty Hill Memorial Garden in San Augustine.

Betty Sue Cooper

Betty Sue Cooper, 86, of Shelbyville, passed away Wednesday, February 12, 2025, in Center.
Funeral service will be held at 1:00 p.m., Saturday, February 15, 2025, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center
with visitation beginning at Noon. Interment will follow at Wimberly Cemetery in Huxley.
Born July 8, 1938, in Shreveport, Louisiana, Betty is the daughter of Carl Henderson McWhiney and Lula Smith
McWhiney. She loved crocheting. Betty was a member of Toledo Bend Baptist Church in Huxley.
She is survived by her children, Sarah Boyter and husband Paul of Longview, Brenda Lawson and husband Rick of
Spring, Carl Fletcher and wife Dana of Houston, Carolyn Fulton and husband Mark of Bonanza, Oregon, Evelyn
Enequist and husband John of Essexville, Michigan, and Billy Cooper and wife Elane of Orlando, Florida; 22
grandchildren; numerous great grandchildren; sister, Elizabeth Bowler of Jackson, Michigan; and a host of other
relatives and friends.
Preceded in death by husband, Kenneth Dean Cooper; children, Ronald Fletcher, Donald Fletcher, and Catherine
Fletcher; parents, Carl Henderson McWhiney and Lula Smith McWhiney; brother, Leroy McWhiney; and sisters,
Audrey Stolz and Nannie Bush.

Kenneth Louis Courville Sr.

Mr. Kenneth Louis Courville Sr., age 72, of Pineland, Texas, passed away Monday, February 10, 2025, in Jasper, Texas.

He was born February 20, 1952, in Lafayette Parish, Louisiana, to parents Alice Stelly and Alphen Courville and had been a longtime resident of the Southeast Texas area before moving to Sabine County, Texas, several years ago. 

Mr. Courville had formerly worked at the plants of Southeast Texas and later retired from Ritter's in Hemphill, Texas, where he worked several years and was a foreman. He had a great love for outdoor activities.

His survivors include a daughter, Tonya Streadl and husband Brandon of Nederland, Texas; son, Kenneth Courville Jr. and wife Christina of Pineland, Texas; sister, Debbie Roberts of Port Arthur, Texas; brothers, Brian Courville of Port Arthur, Texas, Roland Courville of Jennings, Louisiana, Kevin Courville of Port Arthur, Texas; and Vincent Tantillo of Argentina; and grandsons, Gatlin Courville, Korbin Courville, and Kolson Courville.

He was preceded in death by his father, Alphen Courville; mother, Alice Stelly Tantillo; a brother, Allen Courville; and a sister, Lillian Roberts.

His family wishes to express a special thank you to Vickie and Brandon Bailey for the help and support.

A Celebration of Life service will be held at 2:30 p.m. Saturday, February 22, 2025, at Bethany Missionary Baptist Church, located at 4720 Plainview Hwy./FM 2024 near Pineland, Texas. Bro. Wayne Alford and Bro. Charles Moody will be officiating.

Margurett Basham Crandall

Margurett Basham Crandall, age 87, of Bronson, Texas, passed away at her residence on January 28, 2025.

Margurett was born September 27, 1937, in Maceo, Kentucky, to James and Mae Basham. She attended Maceo Elementary and graduated from Davies County High School.

After graduation, she moved to Owensboro, Kentucky, to start work at Owensboro Hospital. She then married the love of her life, "Bud," after they wrote letter to each other a few months. Bud went to Kentucky to bring his bride home to Texas. They married on October 8, 1960, and were married for 62 years. Her Love passed away January 17, 2023.

She loved her Lord and was very active in doing the Lord's work. She was a stay-at-home mom. Margurett enjoyed working in her garden and growing her own so she could can the food she raised for her family. She enjoyed painting and doing various crafts.

She will be deeply missed by her family and friends.

A Celebration of Life memorial will be held at 1:00 p.m. Saturday, March 29, 2025, at Trinity Baptist Church on FM 83 East in Broaddus, Texas, with Pastor Don Lofton officiating.

Robert Vanlandingham

Robert Vanlandingham, 86, of Shelbyville, Texas, passed away Wednesday, February 5, 2025, in Center. He was born on June 4, 1938, in Gilmer, Texas. A celebration of his life will be held at Patroon Baptist Church (984 FM 2261, Shelbyville, TX) on Saturday, February 8, 2025, at 11:00 a.m. Bro. Kevin Windham will officiate. Bob married Opal in 1971, and they were blessed with five children between them, Stephen and Diane (Bob’s children) and Larry, Terry, and Stanley (Opal’s children). They had no children together. Bob worked in many places and was talented in carpentry, welding, and repair of just about anything. He retired as a Correctional Officer in the State of Texas penal system and was known for his dedication and hard work. Bob had a passion for fishing, traveling, and working around the house. He enjoyed spending time outdoors and exploring new places. Bob's presence will be deeply missed by all who knew and loved him. Reathea Loggins

Reathea Loggins was born May 1, 1955, and died February 5, 2025. She married Roger Loggins in October 1975 and they were married for 27 years until his death in 2002.

Reathea enjoyed crocheting, working puzzles, and watching old movies, especially John Wayne and Elvis!

She was preceded in death by her husband, Roger; and her mother and step-dad, Callie and Curtis Pugh.

She is survived by her brother, Edward Oldham, his wife Karen, and their daughter Sophie; and her aunt, Faye Elliott.

The family will have a private graveside service at Chinquapin/Loggins Cemetery, where she will be buried near Roger.

James Donald "Jim" Haas

James Donald "Jim" Haas, age 79, of San Augustine County, Texas, passed away Thursday, January 30, 2025, at his residence.

Mr. Haas was born May 31, 1945, in Akron, Ohio, to parents Sara Alice (Pond) and Charles Richard Haas. Jim has lived in several places throughout his life, however, San Augustine has been home since 2009. He retired after working many years as a mill wright. 

He is survived by his wife, Cassie Haas of San Augustine County. He was preceded in death by his son, Timothy.

A Celebration of Life is being planned at the family residence on May 31, 2025, which would be his 80th birthday.
