Nell Polley

Nell Polley, 88, of Center, passed away Sunday, October 29, 2023, in Lufkin. Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Friday, November 3, 2023, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with visitation from 1:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. Bro. Joel McMahon will officiate. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Born November 14, 1934, in the Patroon Community of Shelby County, Nell is the daughter of Ivey Alexander and Maureen Sims Alexander. A strong willed, faith-filled lady, Nell loved her family, friends, and Church. Nell shared good humor and a big smile with everyone she met. She could light up a room and always enjoyed telling a good joke. While at home, you could find Nell riding in her golf cart, working in the yard, tending to her dogs and beautiful flowers. She also enjoyed sitting on her back porch drinking tea while watching the birds and deer. She enjoyed going shopping and getting her nails done with her best friend Sue Russell and her daughter Charlotte. Nell adored time spent with her grandchildren and great grandchildren. She loved the Christmas season and would often begin shopping and decorating months in advance. Chevy Chase’s Christmas Vacation was her favorite movie and she loved watching it with family over and over again every Christmas. Nell was a lifelong member of The First United Methodist Church where she served on various committees. In her early years she enjoyed going fishing and hunting with O.H. at the camp house and traveling to the valley to visit family.

She is survived by her daughter, Charlotte Sparks and husband H.B.; son, Mike Polley and wife Raj; grandchildren, Ashley Golden and husband D.D., Hillary McElroy and husband Collin, Radha Polley, Nikhil Polley, and Anjali Polley; great grandchildren, Gavin Golden, Mason Golden, Connor McElroy, Tucker McElroy, and Olivia Jamie McElroy; and her beloved dogs, Bo and Bear. Preceded in death by husband, O.H. Polley; parents, Ivey Alexander and Maureen Sims Alexander; sister, Nedra Tillman; and brothers, Waymon Alexander, James Alexander, and Jack Alexander.

Selma Faye (Killen) Bush

Selma Faye (Killen) Bush, 83, of Shelbyville, Texas, passed away on October 22, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. She was born on August 23, 1940, in McClelland, Texas, to the late George Franklin Killen and Mary Lee (Lovell) Killen.

Funeral services will be held at 2PM on Thursday, October 26, 2023, at Mangum Funeral Home, with Bro. Chris Collins officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1PM at Mangum Funeral Home.

Selma was born and raised in Shelby County. She graduated from Shelbyville High School. She married the love of her life, Joe Parrish Bush, in 1957, and the two shared many wonderful years together before his passing in 2018. They raised two children, Stevie and Cheryl. Selma was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great-grandmother. She enjoyed spending time with her family and the grandchildren. She also enjoyed making floral arrangements. Selma loved to cook and go to church when she was well. Although she was not able to go to church she watched as many church services on television as she could. She was a woman that loved the Lord and was longing for the time she could go be with him and her family.

She is survived by her daughter, Cheryl Kaul and husband Ralf Mangum Funeral Home Laird Funeral Home, Inc. Brent Warren Dance

Brent Warren Dance, 51, of Center, Texas, passed away on October 16, 2023. He was born on September 13, 1972, in Shreveport, Louisiana, to Sammy Dance and Barbara (Warren) Dance.

A funeral service will be held at 2PM on Friday, October 20, 2023, at Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas, with Rev. Malcolm Monroe officiating. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

A visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1PM at Mangum Funeral Home.

Brent graduated from Center High School in 1991. He then attended Texas Tech University majoring in Business Administration and Finance. He graduated in 1995 with Cum Laude honors. Brent worked at Shelby Savings Bank as a loan officer from 1995 until 1997 when he went into the ice and water distribution business. He built a new plant on Louisiana Street and the company known as Artic Ice and Clear Springs delivered ice and water to Shelby and its surrounding counties for the next 15 years. After selling Artic Ice and Clear Springs, Brent began working as a registered landman. He enjoyed the research and traveling throughout the East Texas area to lease minerals. Brent was a member of the National Association of Registered Landmen, several organizations related to flying, and was a charter member of Pineywoods Flyers. Brent was a lifelong member of the First Methodist Church, Center. Mangum Funeral Home Laird Funeral Home, Inc.

He is survived by his parents, Sammy and Barbara Dance Son, Raymond Edward Dance Brothers, Spence Dance and wife Monica Sammy Jefferson Dance and wife Judith Nieces and Nephews, Sierra Dance Ashley Dance Connor Dance Aunts and Uncles, Connie Mettauer and husband Joe Bill Kathy Ross Warren Numerous cousins and friends.

Born September 6, 1934, in Shelby County, Noel is the son of Hoya Grant and Ruth Smith Grant. He loved working and loved his church, First Pentecostal Church of Jesus Christ.

Janice Kay (Eaves) Faussett, 73, of Tenaha, Texas, passed away on October 13, 2023, in Nacogdoches, Texas. She was born on December 2, 1949, in Center, Texas, to the late Floyd Eaves and Maurice (Ballard) Eaves.

A graveside service will be held at 2PM on Tuesday, October 17, 2023, at Restland Cemetery in Tenaha, Texas, with Bro. E.J. Adams officiating.

Janice enjoyed her animals and the outdoors. Horses being her favorite. She had Lightening, Bear, Jake, Serrett, and Bubba the mule. Her puppy So- So was another favorite which David recalls she thought more of than him sometimes. A cat named Maggie would run around outside from the barn to the house. Janice and David would sit and drink lots of coffee and watch as many westerns as they could in a day. When Janice was no longer able to attend church, she and David enjoyed hearing Bro. Charles Stanley and David Jeremiah on TV on Sunday mornings. Then late evening David would read the bible to her while they enjoyed their evening coffee. Janice loved that after her doctor’s appointments she and David would go to Denny’s and enjoy her special hamburger. It’s the little things about life and Janice that made it easy to love her.

She is survived by her husband, David Faussett of Tenaha Daughter, Billie Kay Wheless and husband Jason of Logansport, Louisiana Brothers, Mangum Funeral Home Laird Funeral Home, Inc. Thurman Edward Sanford

 

Thurman Edward Sanford, 86, of Center, Texas, passed away on October 11, 2023, surrounded by loved ones. He was born on March 21, 1937, in Center, Texas, to the late Arlon Otis Sanford and Alice Virginia (Cain) Sanford. Honoring his wishes to be cremated, the family plans to spread his ashes in the Piney woods of East Texas.

Thurman was born and raised in Shelby County. He joined the workforce and moved to the Fort Worth area. He met the love of his life, Oleta, and the two were married in 1961. They raised three wonderful children. After retiring from Tarrant County Pct. 3., they returned to Shelby County and have made their home here. They have spent over 62 years together. Thurman loved the Pineywoods. He enjoyed woodworking, gardening, raising farm animals, and just about anything outdoors. He loved spending time with his family, especially his grandchildren, great grands, and great- great grands. His love will be missed by many.

Born October 17, 1932, in Nacogdoches County, Dorothy is the daughter of John Preston Hooper and Mary Elizabeth McKinney Hooper.

She is survived by her niece and nephews, Tommy Spurlock of Joaquin, Duane Hooper of Houston, Gerald Hooper of Houston, Martha Burch of Houston, Donald Hooper of Shreveport, Louisiana, Charles Hooper of Louisiana, and Kenneth Hooper; also, numerous great nieces and nephews; other relatives; and a host of friends.

Aaron Weldon Boles

Aaron Weldon Boles, 87, of Center passed away Friday October 6, 2023, at home surrounded by his family.

He was born January 27, 1936 in Center, Texas to the late Aaron Stephenson and Mary Barbee Boles.

Funeral service will be held at 2PM on Monday, October 9, 2023, at Mangum Funeral Home with Brother Rob Merriman officiating. Interment will be at Oak Lawn Memorial Cemetery.

Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1PM.

Weldon was in the propane business for over 60 years. He started his career driving a propane truck for Mac Bussey who owned Bu-Pane. Mr. Bussey and his wife Mattie Lou played an instrumental part in Weldon’s life. Just out of high school, Weldon went to work for Johnny Johnson’s service station just off the Center square. The Bussey’s were customers and Mattie Lou told Mac that there was a nice young man working there and he better hire him. That was the beginning of his propane career.

  After a few years of serving East Texas as a propane driver, Weldon became a manager, and soon after, Petrolane purchased Bu-Pane. After the company was sold, he and his family were transferred to Houston with Petrolane to work in their wholesale division. In 1975 he purchased Farmers LP Gas from James Campbell. Over the next 40 years, Weldon had a passion for buying and selling retail and wholesale propane companies. In addition to his time in the propane business, he was a board member and stockholder for many years at Shelby Savings Bank.

Weldon took pride in helping many people in his community and church over the years. Weldon was a member of the Shelbyville Masonic Lodge, Texas Propane Gas Association, National Propane Gas Association, Shelbyville Lions Club, and the First Baptist Church of Shelbyville.  Mangum Funeral Home Laird Funeral Home, Inc.

Sara Edison Goldsberry, 72, of Shelbyville, passed away Friday, October 6, 2023, in Carthage. Visitation will be held from 6:00 p.m. to 8:00 p.m., Sunday, October 8, 2023, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.

Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Monday, October 9, 2023, at Watson & Sons Chapel. Interment will follow at New Hope Cemetery in Center.

Born April 8, 1951, Sara is the daughter of J.H. Edison and Joyce Sanford Edison. Sara loved her family and doing things for them. She was never too busy to spend time with them and was always eager to keep her grand babies any time she got the chance. She enjoyed making clothes for her children and grandchildren. One of things that brought her joy was getting in the kitchen and cooking for people and she was an excellent cook. She was a woman of many talents. Her hobbies were sewing, embroidering, painting, gardening, arts and crafts, and many other things. She also loved the outdoors. Fishing was one of her favorite things to do. She could spend the whole day fishing and never catch a fish and still want to go back the next day. She also enjoyed deer hunting. Needless to say she never lacked things to fill her days. Her relationship with the Lord was very important to her. She loved helping with church events. She taught vacation bible school and helped with all the activities. Her love of life and family will always be remembered by those who loved her.

She is survived by daughter, Youndra Dunman; son, Clint Ramsey; grandchildren, Kaleb Dunman, Colton Ramsey, Ocara Breaux, Ryan Dunman, Braddy Dunman, Gabriel Ramsey, Delaney Ramsey, Lucy Ramsey, and Tucker Ramsey; 8 great grandchildren; mother, Joyce Hughes; and brother, James Edison.

Sharon Ann (Lout) Conway, 76, of Center, Texas, passed away on October 3, 2023, surrounded by loved ones in Nacogdoches. She was born on May 16, 1947, in Center, Texas, to the late Ewell Maurice Lout and Dorothy LaVerne (Sanders) Lout.

A funeral service will be held at 2PM on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at Center First UPC. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park.

Visitation will be held from 6-8PM on Friday, October 6, 2023, at Center First UPC. Also, the family will receive friends on Saturday beginning at 1PM before the service.

Sharon was born and raised in Shelby County. She graduated from Center High School. She met the love of her life, Luther Conway, through mutual friends. The two were married on May 12, 1967, and shared more than 56 years together. They raised two wonderful children, Andrea and Justin. Sharon enjoyed feeding her animals, working in her flower beds, and gardening. She was a loving wife, mother, grandmother, and great- grandmother (ShaSha) as her grandkids knew her. She loved spending time with her family. Especially those grandkids and great grandkids. Sharon loved the Lord and served him through Center First UPC.

Joe Dale Jolley, 63, of Center, Texas, passed away on September 30, 2023, at home surrounded by loved ones. He was born on December 22, 1959, in Mineral Wells, Texas, to the late Tennie Tex Jolley and Alice Joy (Strawbridge) Jolley.

Funeral services will be held at Mangum Funeral Home, on Saturday, October 7, 2023, at 11AM with Bro. Jason Wood officiating. Interment will follow at New Hope Cemetery.

Joe was raised in Tenaha, Texas. He attended Tenaha High School. He met the love of his life in church, Mary Pierce, and they were married on July 7, 1977. They raised 3 wonderful children, Jennifer, Joy, and Joseph. Joe was also known as the repo man as he worked many years in Shelby County repossessing for local banks. Throughout these years he made many friends. He also spent many years working at San Augustine Pawn & Gun shop and Bobs Pawn and Gun. He never met a stranger as he was a very personable man. He was kindhearted. Joe was a peacemaker. You could find Joe riding his four-wheeler, working in the yard, or just piddling as he would say. His pride and joy was Mary, and he did everything he could to make sure she was taken care of. Joe loved spending time with his children, and grandchildren, and his fur baby Dinky.

He is survived by his wife, Mary Jolley, of 46 years Mangum Funeral Home Laird Funeral Home, Inc.
