Hazel Cornelius Williams

 

 

Hazel Cornelius Williams, 90, of Center, Texas, passed away on November 27, 2019 in Center, Texas. Born June 29, 1929, in Center, Texas, Hazel is the daughter of the late Archie Aaron Dean and Leona (Guidry) Williams.  Funeral service will be held Saturday, November 30, 2019 at 11AM at Oaklawn Memorial Park, Center, Texas with Bro. Michael Williams officiating.

 

Visitation will be held on Friday, November 29, 2019 from 5:00 – 7:00 PM at Mangum Funeral Home. 

 

Hazel was born and raised in Shelby County, Texas.  She attended Center High School.  Hazel married the love of her life, K.P. Williams, December 02, 1947 and the two were married over 64 years before his passing,  She had an entrepreneurial spirit which led her to open “Wig Villa” in the early 70’s.  She later owned a H & R Block franchise for several years.  She enjoyed reading, along with keeping up with family and friends on Facebook.  Hazel is a member of the Eastern Star.  She served her Lord passionately by attending Center Christian Fellowship and Pleasant Grove Baptist Church. 

 

Hazel is survived by her sons, LaMoine Williams of Lufkin, Texas, Michael W. Williams and wife Brenda of Willis Point, Texas; daughter, Regina Metcalf of Center, Texas; brother, Aaron Thomas Dean and wife Peggy of Livingston, Texas; grandchildren, Jana Hagler of Center, Texas, Joel Porter of Center, Texas, Amy Bryant and husband Jason of Keller, Texas, Rebecca Lackey of Broaddus, Texas, Chris Williams and wife Cissy of Willis Point, Texas, Charity Morgan and husband Jason of Edgewood, Texas, Amanda Strutton and husband Ryan of Willis Point, Texas, Jennifer Byrd and husband Clinton of Keller, Texas, Jonathan Williams and wife Elizabeth of Rockwall, Texas; 32 great grandchildren; 4 great grandchildren; and a host of family and friends that will miss her dearly.

 

She is preceded in death by her husband, K.P. Williams Jr.; parents, Archie and Leona Dean; grandson, Nathan Williams; and sister, Era Maxine Williams.

 

 

Peggy Jean Stilley Yarborough

 

 

Peggy Jean Stilley Yarborough, 87, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2019.
A graveside service will be held on Friday, November 29, 2019, at 2:00 p.m. at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center, Texas.

 

Mrs. Yarborough was born September 30, 1932, in Shelby County, to William Ottis and Gladys Wiliford Stilley.   She was a retired nurse and loved to paint; she studied under well-known artist Woodrow Foster.  In addition, Mrs. Yarborough was an avid bird watcher, Sunday school teacher and active participant in the Churchbuilder’s Ministry out of First Baptist Timpson where she was a member.

Clara O. Oliver Williams

 

 

Clara O. Oliver Williams, 90, of the Waterman Community of Shelby County, passed away Wednesday, November 27, 2019, in Nacogdoches.


Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Friday, November 29, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center with Bro. Son Windham and Bro. Greg Sustis officiating.  Interment will follow at White Rock Cemetery in Center.  Visitation will be held one hour prior to service time.
Ms. Williams was born April 20, 1929, in the Shiloh Community of San Augustine County, to Phineas Oliver and Minnie Love Oliver.  Her hobbies included quilting, gardening, and working in her yard and with her flowers.  She was a member of White Rock Missionary Baptist Church in Center.


She is survived by her daughters, Audrey Ann Polvadore and husband Roy of Center, Deborah Jeanette Peavy of Grand Bluff, and Ellen Alice Hearne of Center; grandchildren, Dejuana Risinger of Tenaha, Rayford Hutto of Center, Clinton Risinger of Center, Bridget Fontenot of Carthage, Chris Pleasant of Woodville, and Adam Pleasant of Center; nine great grandchildren; and five great great grandchildren; sister-in-law, Pauline Oliver of Nacogdoches; special niece, Betty Mills of Chireno; cousins, Elizabeth Fountain of San Augustine and Margaret Duty of Decatur; numerous other nieces, nephews, cousins, family, and a host of friends.


She is preceded in death by her husband, Fate Williams; daughter, Fay Allsbrooks; grandson, Jess Allsbrooks; parents, Phineas Oliver and Minnie Love Oliver; and six siblings.
Pallbearers will be Clinton Risinger, Adam Pleasant, Dustin Hearne, Colton Risinger, David Hutto, Rayford Hutto, and Bobby Hutto.  Honorary pallbearer will be Pete Mills.

David Wayne Hooper

 

 

David Hooper, 56, of Center, Texas passed away on November 25, 2019 in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born on January 20, 1963 in Center, Texas to Verlon Ray Hooper and Thelma Andrews Hooper. Graveside services will be held at 11AM on Friday, November 29, 2019 at Old Salem Cemetery with Bro. Son Windham officiating. 


David grew up in Center. He was an avid reader, loved learning about history, especially his family’s genealogy.  He loved his family and was his parent’s caregiver before his passing.  He worked in the security industry for many years, loved dogs and being outdoors.  He enjoyed doing mechanical work and working with his hands.  He was a member of Old Salem Baptist Church. 


David is survived by his mother, Thelma Hooper of Center, Texas; brother, Jerry Hooper and wife, Beth, of Greensboro, NC; sister, Jana Hooper of Shreveport, Louisiana; nieces, Katie and Gracie, and nephew, Kayden Hooper of Greensboro, NC; aunts, Vivian Luman of Center, Texas and Lucille Mayeaux of Shreveport, Louisiana; and a host of family and friends that will miss him dearly.
He is preceded in death by his father, Verlon Hooper.

Benjamin Thomas “Shorty” Nichols, 57, passed away Sunday, November 24, 2019.

Mr. Nichols was born September 2, 1962, in Shelby County, to Preston Henry and Betty Ann Nichols.  His hobbies included hunting, fishing, gatherings with friends and family and he had a love for children. Mr. Nichols was saved and baptized at East Hamilton Baptist Church.

John Edd Giles, 86, of Murfreesboro, Tennessee, passed away November 15, 2019, in Murfreesboro.

Ms. Tyler was born June 23, 1934, in the Pedro Community of Lawrence County, Ohio.  Her hobbies included sewing, reading, gardening, playing any type of card games, and also playing bubble pop. She was a member of First United Methodist Church in Logansport, Louisiana.

Annabell Burson, 83, of Huxley, passed away Wednesday on November 20, 2019 at Woodland Heights Medical Center in Lufkin.

Annabell was born August 16, 1936 in Seiling Oklahoma to Dodge M. Russell and Jennie E. Russell.  After she graduated from high school, she attended nursing school and became a Registered Nurse (R.N.).  While attending nursing school, she met Jack D. Burson and they were married on March 29, 1957.  After becoming a R.N., Annabell served as a nurse in the Obstetric Departments in hospitals in Stillwater, Oklahoma and Lake Charles, Louisiana.  She was a member of the Center Church of Christ.


She is preceded in death by her husband, Jack D. Burson; son, Russell David Burson; parents, Dodge M. Russell and Jennie E. Russell; and brother Leonard Russell.


She is survived by two sisters, Betty Miller of Amarillo, Texas and Rosalee Cartwright of Morris, Illinois; brother, Oliver Earl Russell of Washington state; brother-in-law Byron Burson of College Station, TX; and several nieces and nephews.

Danny Scarborough

 

 

Danny Lamar “Big Daddy” Scarborough, 68, passed away November 19, 2019 in Tyler, Texas. 
He was born November 22, 1950 in Center, Texas, to Jeff and Ruth Scarborough.  He was a member and Deacon of Smyrna Missionary Baptist Church where he taught Sunday school for many many years.  He loved the Lord and had a huge impact on the life of many through his teaching of the Bible and how he led by example in his day to day life.  Danny was loved by all and was always known by everyone as “Big Daddy”.  Big Daddy was very active in his children and grandchildren’s lives and attended as many of their functions as he could fit in whether it be sports to theatre events.  He loved to fish, hunt, play 42, pitch washers and watch westerns.  He will be missed by a multitude of friends and family that loved him, but we all rest easy in knowing he is resting in the arms of Jesus. 

 

Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Friday, November 22, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  Funeral service will be held at 11:00 a.m., Saturday, November 23, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. James Richard Shofner

 

 

James Richard Shofner, 89 of Center, Texas, left this world on Monday, November 18, 2019, in Nacogdoches, Texas. He was born to Martin Lee and Bessie Flemings Shofner on December 21, 1929, in Center, Texas. After graduating high school, he proudly served his country for eight years in the United States Navy, where he completed a tour of duty during the Korean War. After being honorably discharged, James promised the Lord if He would let him get back to the Piney Woods of East Texas he would never leave for long. It was a promise he kept short of a few brief vacations. 

 

Upon his marriage to Rosa, he settled in Center to raise a family and run his machine shop building, tinkering and creating for many years. He was a Master Mason and was the Worshipful Master of Lodge 149. James was a faithful follower of Jesus Christ and a long-time member of Pleasant Hill Missionary Baptist Church in Huxley, Texas, where he was a deacon for 58 years. Everyone who knew him knew of his faith and unending love for Jesus.

 

He passed that love along not only to his family, but also to countless friends and strangers alike. We are certain that upon reaching the Pearly Gates he was met by a host of family and friends and welcomed with the words, “Well done, thou good and faithful servant.” Services will be Thursday November 21, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home at 10:00 a.m. with visitation Wednesday November 20, 2019 at Mangum Funeral Home from 5-7 p.m. Interment will be at Oaklawn Memorial Park. 

 

James is survived by his loving wife of 63 years, Rosa Lee Vaughn Shofner of Center. Daughters Debora Shofner Johnson and husband Darrell of Center and Janet Shofner Wilburn of Center.

Richard Griffin, 80, of Center, passed away Monday, November 18, 2019, in Center.
Visitation will be held from 5:00 p.m. to 7:00 p.m., Tuesday, November 19, 2019, at Watson & Sons Funeral Home in Center.  Funeral service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Wednesday, November 20, 2019, at Watson & Sons Chapel with Bro. Rusty Hall officiating.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.


Mr. Griffin was born August 21, 1939, in Center, to Dick Griffin and Clara Anderson Griffin.  He was a member of First Baptist Church in Center, where he was involved in the Fellowship Sunday school class.


He is survived by his wife, Mary Ann Alford Griffin of Center; sons, Robert Griffin and wife Melody of Center and David Griffin of Center; grandson, Blake Griffin of Center; special friends, Linda Jansen and her son Drake of Huxley and Alex Rafael of Center; brothers, Bobby Griffin and wife Carol of Lufkin and Jerry Griffin and wife Phyllis of Joaquin; brother-in-law, Charles Alford and wife Mary Lou of San Augustine; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.
He is preceded in death by his parents, Dick and Clara Griffin; brother, Dan Griffin; daughter-in-law, Vickie Case Griffin; and father-in-law and mother-in-law, Buford and Jimmie Alford.

Peggy Ann (Miller) Lawson

 

 

Peggy Ann (Miller) Lawson, 94, of Shelbyville, Texas passed away on November 9, 2019 in Texas City, Texas.  Born July 24, 1925, in Hertfordshire, England, Peggy is the daughter of the late Frederick Miller and Lucy (Brett) Miller.  Graveside service will be held Sunday, November 17, 2019 at 2 PM at Liberty Hill Cemetery, San Augustine, Texas with Bro. Ronnie Wheeler officiating. 

 

Visitation will be held prior to the service on Sunday, November 17, 2019 from 12:30 – 1:30 PM at Mangum Funeral Home.  

 

Peggy was born and raised in Hertfordshire, England.  She met the love of her life, Jasper McShan, while he was serving in the United States military.  Peggy decided to move to the United States to join him and the two were married shortly after.  They spent many years together before his passing in 1981.  She later met her soulmate, John Lawson, and the two were married in Patroon on May 16, 1982.  The two enjoyed fulfilling life together until his passing in 2006.  Peggy worked for Deep East Texas Electric Co-op, retiring with more than 32 years of service.  Peggy enjoyed gardening, walking her dog, and especially working in her flower gardens.  She was a devoted member of Patroon Baptist Church while her health permitted.  She loved the Lord and served as church treasurer for many years.  Peggy touched many lives through the years.  

She is survived by her daughters, Susan Lawson Page and husband Ronald of Nederland, Texas, Elizabeth Lawson of Texas City, Texas, Patricia Lawson Swaby and husband Richard of Goodrich, Texas, brother, Donald Miller of England; sister, Jean Shepherd of England; grandchildren, Shawna Page, Stefanie Plaunty and husband Justin, Charli Miller and husband Carl, Tabitha Swaby; great grandchildren, Gavin and Benjamin Plaunty, Kalle and Kaden Miller, Jared and Jacoby Mowles; great great granddaughter, Coraline Mowles; nephews, Frank Johnson of Nacogdoches, Texas, Truman Johnson of Garrison, Texas, Jackie Johnson of Garrison, Texas; many nieces and nephews in England; and a host of family and friends that will miss her dearly.

Jo Anne Russell, 61, of Huntington, passed away Friday, November 8, 2019, in Lufkin.

Mrs. Russell was born March 8, 1958, in Houston, to Elzie Ray Barlow and Marvlet Galloway Barlow.  She was employed as a nurse. She enjoyed gardening and caring for people, especially her grandbaby.  Mrs. Russell was a member of Heritage Baptist Church in Lufkin.


She is survived by her husband, Larry Russell of Huntington; daughter, Heather Russell of Lufkin; grandson, Brylan Chase and his father Larry Chase of Lufkin; mother, Marvlet Barlow of Center; sisters, Connie Mora of Center, Cheryl Denny and husband Jerry of Citronelle, Alabama, and Kathy Grayson and husband Johnny of Center; mother-in-law, Weida Lowery of Center; brother-in-law, Jerry Russell of Center; and nephew, Kurt Russell of Longview; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and friends.


She is preceded in death by her father, Elzie Ray Barlow; and brother-in-law, Greg Mora.

Waymon Edward Armstreet

 

 

Waymon Edward Armtreet, 82, of Houston, Texas passed away on November 7, 2019 in Houston, Texas.  Born December 22, 1936, in Shelby County, Texas, Waymon is the son of the late William Wayne Armstreet and Shelby Exa (Risinger) Armstreet.  Graveside service will be held Sunday, November 10, 2019 at 2PM at Duncan Cemetery, Shelbyville, Texas. 

 

Visitation will be held prior to the graveside service from 12:00 – 1:00 PM at Mangum Funeral Home.  

 

Waymon graduated from Strong School in Shelby County.  He was a loving father, and enjoyed spending time with and taking care of his son, John, until his passing in 2015.  Waymon worked in Houston, Texas as a dedicated fireman.  Later in his career he bacame Fire Chief at Houston’s Station 19.  When he was not working you could find him fishing on the Guadalupe with his nephew, Lynn, and some of his coworkers from his station.  

 

Waymon is survived by his wife, Marcia Rojas Armstreet of Atlanta, Georgia; mother of his child, Margaret June Gordon Armstreet; sisters, Vivian “Sis” Raymond of Shelbyville, Texas, Lucille Smith of Center, Texas; nephews, Lynn Raymond and wife Christine of Shelbyville, Texas, Jerry Raymond and wife Gina of Shelbyville, Texas, Steve Smith and wife Deb of Center, Texas, Kenneth Smith and wife Elizabeth of Hollow Rock, Tennessee; niece, Margo Griffith and husband Waylon, Center, Texas; special friend, Mike Phillips, Mike Casey; and a host of family and friends that will miss him dearly.  

 

He is preceded in death by his parents, Wayne and Exa Armstreet; son, John Wayne Armstreet.

Scotty Baldwin

 

Scotty Baldwin, 46, of Center, passed away Friday, November 8, 2019, in Nacogdoches.

Scotty was born March 19, 1973, in Center, to Mike and Joan Baldwin. He was one of a kind. Scotty loved to make people smile and would give you the shirt off his back.  He was the most loyal, big-hearted friend to everyone he met.  Growing up, you would find Scotty either at the cow lot, roping pen, or chicken houses.  He always wanted to follow in his daddy’s footsteps.  His greatest passion was steer wrestling with his daddy right beside him as his hazer. His daddy was his hero.  Most knew Scotty as “Hollywood” when he was a truck driver.  He married the love of his life, Pam, and they had two beautiful daughters, Alli Jo and Savannah.  After Pam passed away, it was just him and Alli.  She was his everything.  He later married Carrie and found love again he thought he never would find.  He will be greatly missed by his friends and family.


He is survived by his wife, Carrie Baldwin; daughters, Alli Jo Baldwin and Savannah Green Dutton and husband Robbey; parents, Mike and Joan Baldwin; sister, Angie Baldwin Barbee; brothers-in-law, Pat Scarborough and wife Jaclyn and Phillip and Stacey Scarborough; nieces and nephews, Brayden, Brylee, Brysen, and Bryant Scarborough and Ashton and Saylor Scarborough; stepsons, Cody Bryce and wife Ally, and Tucker and Tanner Williams; and mother-in-law and father-in-law, Judy and Danny Scarborough.

Steve Boyd, 73, of Joaquin, passed away Thursday, November 7, 2019, in Nacogdoches.

Steve was born on August 26, 1946 in Logansport, Louisiana to David (D.B.) and Maurine Farmer Boyd. He was an avid outdoorsman and loved hunting and fishing. He was raised in the Bethel Community in Logansport and loved traipsing over the property hunting and fishing the ponds around there. 

 

Survived by his wife of 30 years, Barbara Boyd of Center, Texas.

Solon (Wayne) Ponder, 93, of Joaquin, Texas passed away on November 7, 2019 in Center, Texas. He was born February 5, 1926, in Ewing, Illiois, to Solon and Fleta Ponder.  

 

He is survived by his; Son, Dale Ponder and wife Marinna of TX; Daughters; Debra Goodwin of Nevada and Kaye Nealy of Washington; 7 Grandchildren, 8 Great Grandchildren, 1 Great-Great Grandchild, and a host of family and friends that will miss him dearly. Mr. Ponder was a WWII veteran serving in the United States Air Force retiring after 27 ½ years of service for his country.

Services will be Tuesday November 12, 2019 at 11:00 a.m. at Mangum Funeral Home with Visitation Monday November 11, 2019 from 5:00-7:00 p.m. at Mangum Funeral Home. Burial will follow in Benton, Illinois. 

 

Mr. Ponder is preceded in death by his Wife of 69 years, Betty Evelyn Ponder and Son Michael Wayne Ponder.

Dot was born May 19, 1930, in Center, to Jimmy W. Davis and Grace Estelle Doggett Davis.  She was a bookkeeper for the radio station for many years.  Dot loved to sing gospel music whether it was in the choir or with a quartet.  She was a member of First Baptist Church in Center.
She is survived by her children, Mitch Smith and wife Connie of Kilgore, Mike Smith and wife Cathy of Kilgore, and Kandi Grissom and husband John of Diana; grandchildren, Robert Smith, Jared Smith, Eric Smith, Kevin Ellis, and John Douglas Grissom; 9 great grandchildren; numerous nieces, nephews, other relatives and a host of friends.

Chester “Chet” John Hribal Jr., 56, of Center, Texas passed away on October 18, 2019 in Center, Texas.  Born August 19, 1963, in Kansas City, Missouri, Chet was the son of the late Chester John Hribal Sr. and Iva Joy (McSwain) Hribal.  Celebration of Life will be held on November 10, 2019 at 2 p.m. at Old Salem Missionary Baptist Church.

Judith Grisel Zapata, 45, of Center, Texas passed away on November 2, 2019 in Center, Texas. She was born January 1, 1974, in Papantla DE Olarte Veracruz, Mexico, Judith is the daughter of  Vdlentino Zapata Jimenez and Irma Mora Morales. 

 

She is survived by her husband, Jorge Mejia Camas of Center; son, Joshua Mejia of Center; Father Vdlentino Zapata Jimenez;  sisters,  Irma Zapata Mora and Gudalupe Zapata Mora;  cousins, Faustino Mora Mar, Desiderio Mora Mar and Pascual Mora Mar; numerous nieces and nephews; and a host of family and friends that will miss her dearly.

Karen Creech Thompson, 70, of Center, passed away Sunday, November 3, 2019, in Center.
A memorial service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Thursday, November 7, 2019, at First Baptist Church in Logansport, Louisiana.


Ms. Thompson was born August 17, 1949, in Logansport, Louisiana, to Lloyd Creech and Betty Vancleave Creech. She was a member of First Baptist Church in Logansport, where she taught Sunday school for a few years. During this time, she became known as “Aunt Cookie” to all the children.


She is survived by her son, Charlie B. Thompson of New Orleans, Louisiana; brothers, Billy Creech of Logansport, Louisiana and Sam Creech of Irving, Texas; and numerous nieces and nephews.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Charlie Thompson; parents, Lloyd Creech and Betty Vancleave Creech; and brother, Danny Creech.

Mr. Luster was born December 15, 1963, in Gainesville, Texas, to Veston Luster and Mildred Ryan Luster.  His hobbies included hunting, fishing, and most of all, spending time with his children.
He is survived by his children, Chism Luster and wife Catherine, Kaitlyn Mahon, and Carter Luster; grandchildren; and brother, Billy Luster and Renee McInnis.


He is preceded in death by his parents, Veston and Mildred Luster.
