Juan Solis Jr., 33, of Nacogdoches, passed away Sunday, November 27, 2022. Visitation will start at 12:00 noon on Friday, December 2, 2022 at Watson and Sons Funeral Home in Center, Texas. Funeral Service will be held 12:00 noon Saturday, December 3, 2022 at St. Therese Catholic Church in Center, Texas. Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center, Texas. Born July 13, 1989, Juan or Johnny is the son of Juan Solis and Maria Servin. He worked as a truck driver. Johnny loved spending time with his nieces and nephews, known to them as “Uncle Johnny,” and to most of his friends and coworkers as “Little Johnny or LJ.” He especially enjoyed fishing with his brothers and nephews. His hobby was wood working, where he made many things by hand. Johnny had a love for motorcycles and was often riding his own. Bette Ann Samford

Bette Ann Samford, 85, of Center, Texas, passed away on November 24, 2022, in San Augustine, Texas. She was born on October 16, 1937, in Center, Texas, to the late Alex Merrill Lucas and Linnie Mittie Stephens Lucas. A memorial service will be held at 2PM at Short Methodist Church, on Sunday, December 4, 2022, with Rev. Sherry Harding officiating. Bette was born and raised in Shelby County. She graduated Center High School. She met the love of her life, Ben Samford, and the two were married in 1957. They spent many wonderful years together before his passing in 2017. Bette worked for Southwestern Bell/ AT&T for over 30 years before retiring. She was also a dedicated mother, grandmother, and housewife. Bette found great joy in taking care of family. She enjoyed traveling and seeing the beauty all around. Bette was a worthy matron and member of the Order of Eastern Star Chapter 348. She loved the Lord and was a lifelong member of the First Methodist and Short Methodist Church. She is survived by her son, C.A. Samford and wife Connie of Denton, Texas; grandson, Benjamin Virgil Samford of Denton, Texas; brother, Claude Austin Lucas and wife Bonnie of Center, Texas; nieces, Barbara Samford Pinkston, Cheri Lucas Wheeler; nephews, Austin Lucas, Will Lucas; numerous great nieces and great nephews; and a host of family and friends that will miss her dearly. Randy Lynn Andrews

Randy Lynn Andrews, 71, of Center, Texas, passed away on November 22, 2022, peacefully at his residence in Center, Texas. He was born on January 20, 1951, in Center, Texas, to the late James Joseph Benjamin Andrews and Iva Mae Ogden Andrews. Memorial graveside service will be held at 3PM on Sunday, December 4, 2022, at North Jericho Cemetery, CR 3129 off of FM 699, Center, Texas, with Bro. Mike Belgard officiating. Randy was born and raised in Shelby County. He graduated from Center High School Class of 1969. He loved his son, Joseph, and found joy in spending time with him. Randy was an avid collector of things. He collected coins, hot wheels, monopoly sets, among various other things. Randy loved doing yard work and spending time outdoors. He enjoyed listening to gospel music, especially that of Alan Jackson. He retired from Brookshire Brothers in Center on his birthday in 2017 after working many years for the company in various locations. He is survived by his son, Joseph Andrews and wife Holly; former wife, Robin Folsom Andrews; nieces, Debra Lawson Yarbrough and family, Luciana Lawson Barr and husband Charles and family, Sherry Lawson; and a host of family and friends that will miss him dearly. Lewis Darrell Jones

Lewis Darrell Jones, 85, of Joaquin, Texas, passed away on November 21, 2022, in Joaquin, Texas. He was born on May 20, 1937, in Antioch Community, Shelby County, Texas, to the late Charles Alfred Jones and Ollie “Janie” Rebecca Aiken Jones. Memorial service will be held at Mangum Funeral Home, on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at 2pm. Visitation will be held one hour prior to the service beginning at 1PM on Saturday, December 3, 2022, at Mangum Funeral Home. Darrell was born and raised in the Antioch Community, Shelby County, Texas. He graduated from Joaquin High School. He married his high school sweetheart, the love of his life, Garvis Childress, on December 20, 1957. The two had two wonderful boys, Darrell Dean and Michael Craig, whom they raised in Shelby County. They shared over 60 years together before Garvis’s passing in 2018. Darrell was an avid collector of antiques. He enjoyed hunting and acquiring old knives and Indian artifacts. Darrell was a skilled welder and carpenter and could make or build anything. One of his greatest hobbies was working and landscaping his beautiful flowersbeds. He loved his children, grandchildren, and great grandchildren. More than anything he treasured time spent with family, friends, and loved ones. Thelma Maudine Leach, 88, of Center, Texas, passed away on November 25, 2022, in Center, Texas. She was born on April 26, 1934, in Center, Texas, to the late Alton Murphy Sigler and Narnie Lee Byford Sigler. Graveside service will be held at Antioch Cemetery, San Augustine County, on Sunday, November 27, 2022, at 2pm with Bro. Don Noble officiating. Visitation will be held prior to the service on Sunday, November 27, 2022, beginning at 1PM at Antioch Cemetery. Thelma was born in Shelby County. Her birth was a surprise. She was born just minutes after her twin sister, Velma. She lived most of her life in the Harmony Community in San Augustine, Texas. Thelma was a very gifted individual. She loved sewing, quilting, painting, and wood crafts. She used to say, “if she could draw it, she could build it”. She also enjoyed gardening. She loved the Lord and was a longtime, faithful member of Harmony Baptist Church. Ruby E. (Lawson) Hughes

Ruby E. (Lawson) Hughes, 85, of Center, Texas passed away on Monday, November 21, 2022.

A visitation will be held at Watson & Sons funeral home on Friday, November 25, 2022 at 10:00 am. A graveside service will follow at 12:00 pm at Oaklawn Memorial Park, with Brother Charles Williams officiating.

Ruby was born on October 9, 1937 to Hobson and Lela Jones Lawson. She was the ninth of ten children. She attended Center High School and married her high school sweetheart, Charles Paul Hughes. They were married for 63 years. In their later years, if she and Charlie were walking together, they were holding hands. If ever asked why they held hands everywhere they went, they said they were “holding each other up.” They spent most of their days geocaching and exploring during their retirement, including finding caches in every county in the state of Texas. Ruby was a homemaker, gardener, excellent cook, and quilter extraordinaire. Ruby and Charles Paul raised three sons, Mitchell, Charles Leslie, and Paul. She tended the family poultry farm until after their sons were grown. For many years, she worked at the Shelby County Courthouse during elections. She was part of an elite group of quilters at the James Antioch Community Center, which met weekly to hand stitch the quilts that they all made. Throughout her lifetime, she made dozens of quilts, and mostly gave them away to people that she loved and cared about, including at least one for each of her children and grandchildren. She was a member of Providence Missionary Baptist Church for more than 60 years.

She is survived by many nieces, nephews, church family, friends, and special lifelong friends James and Faye Rudd.

Ruby was preceded in death by her parents, Hobson Lawson and Leila Jones Lawson; husband, Charles Hughes; daughter-in-law, Janet Hughes; brothers: Joel, Glenn, Happy, Forriest, Tommy, and Billy Lawson; sisters, Oleta Lawson Cockrell, Mildred Lawson Partlow, and Judy Lawson Carrington, several brothers and sisters-in-law, and father and mother-in-law Paul and Addie B. Hughes.

Pallbearers will be Aron Hughes, Dustin Hughes, Austin Hughes, Thomas Hughes, Guy Campbell, and Dustin Bailey.

Lloyd Glen Holloway

 

Lloyd Glen Holloway, 82, of Carthage, Texas, passed away on November 13, 2022, in Carthage, Texas. A graveside service will be held at a later date. Details to attend the graveside service will be updated later. Glen was born on December 26, 1939, in San Augustine, Texas, to the late A.L. Holloway and Irene Quinn. He was raised in the Blackjack Community and graduated Chireno High School Class of 1958. It was because of school that he had the privilege of marrying his high school sweetheart, Patsy Jean Balch, on December 3, 1960. Patsy and Glen spent over 20 years together in marriage and to that union they had three wonderful children: Deborah, Stephen, and Wendy. Glen worked as a Diesel mechanic and was just an all-around craftsman. In his older years he found his love for animals and gardening. He loved to sit down and drink coffee while reading his favorite magazines such as Mother Earth’s News, The Farmers Almanac, The Peddler and just the plain old newspaper. He loved spending time with family and friends. He especially loved spending time with his grandchildren, they were his pride and joy. Time spent with family was time cherished.
