Walter Harold Baty

Walter Harold Baty was born in Anderson County on September 6, 1933. He passed away on January 16, 2021 in Shelbyville, Texas.  Funeral service will be held on Monday, January 18, 2021 at 2PM at Mangum Funeral Home, Center, Texas.

Visitation will be held prior to the service beginning at 1PM at Mangum Funeral Home.
Harold is survived by his wife of 61 years, Mary Jo Enmon; sons Walt and wife Kellie of Shelbyville, and Will and wife Jill, of Shelbyville; and grandchildren Wade Baty, Ali Baty, and Stephanie Zipperer.  He is also survived by brother Sam Baty and wife Jenni of Houston; sisters Ida Baty of Tyler and Mary McKelvey of Palestine; and sisters-in-law Billie Bailey and Bettye Baty; numerous nieces and nephews; and special friend of 65 years, Monty Moore.  He is preceded in death by his parents, Horace and Eva Jennings Baty; two brothers, Charles Baty and LeeRoy Baty; two sisters, Leona Wearden and Mickey Johnson; and brother-in-law Sherman Bailey.
Harold was the 5th child in a family of 8.  He grew up on the Neches River and attended Neches Public School as a youth.

In 1953 he graduated from Milby High School in Houston and started his college work at the University of Houston.

In 1954, he was drafted into the Army and joined the 82nd Air Borne as a paratrooper and a member of the All-American 504 Red Devils. He spoke fondly of his time in the Military. After serving his country he resumed his college career. He earned both a Bachelor’s and Master’s Degree in Educational Leadership at Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, Texas, working his way through college with no monetary assistance from anyone.

It was at SFA that he met his beautiful wife Mary Jo.  They married in 1959 and he began his teaching career in Galveston County at Bay Cliff Elementary School.

In 1962, he joined the faculty at Shelbyville School District as a Math Teacher, later becoming Jr. High Coach, High School Counselor, Jr. High Principal, High School Principal, and later Elementary Principal where he remained until his retirement in 1990 with 30 years in education.

After retiring from school business, he became a full time Farmer/Rancher on his farm in Shelbyville.

Mr. Baty also had religious, civic and professional involvement.  Having made a profession of faith at an early age, he has served at various churches throughout his life, and was currently a church member, deacon, and Sunday School Teacher at Ephesus Baptist Church.

He was a 50+ year member of Sam Houston Masonic Lodge #32, a member of Gideons International, a Farm Bureau Member, a past Director of the Heritage Land Bank Board, and a past member of Shriner and Scottish Rites. He was a Lifetime Member of Texas State Teachers Association and served as President of the Shelby County Unit when it was active.

During his time as an educator, he was also a farmer/rancher.  He started the day by checking at least 4 houses of chickens, driving a school bus route, teaching all day, driving the return bus route, coaching during ball season at night, and to add to that, feeding 3 to 4 herds of cattle plus checking those chickens again every evening.

He was all of this and a dedicated, loving husband and father to 2 growing boys.  Having grown-up without a father that was a good role model, he worked extremely hard to be a good father to his children and always be there for them.  He was a man who knew how to work, who taught his boys how to work, and was happiest when he was working the hardest.

No stranger to tragedy, in 1973, his son Walt was almost killed by a hit and run driver. Had it not been for the quick response of him, his son may not have survived.  Later Will totaled a brand new pick-up truck and walked away without a scratch. In 1995, Mr. Baty was diagnosed with cancer. He refused to be defeated.  In 2020, he was diagnosed with COVID-19.  Again he refused to be defeated.

There were triumphs along the way.  In 1987, both Will and Walt were married. They brought wonderful daughters into the family, but in 1997 the adoption of Ali, a beautiful little girl, put the icing on the cake. In 1998, the birth of Wade, a handsome young man and the fourth one to carry the initials of “WHB”, gave him “a joy unspeakable.” He was a happy man!

You may have heard him speak of his love for Shelby County. He often said “many are born here, but I chose to live here because of the people.” Harold Baty loved the people, and he especially loved Mr. Enmon, Mary Jo’s father. He loved him as if he were his own father, and Mrs. Enmon was one of his most avid supporters. He loved her dearly.

Harold Baty was not a man of many words. He was a quiet, gentle man who loved greatly. He was an endearing husband, a proud father, adoring grandfather, and a dependable, loving brother and trusted, giving friend. His place is one that will never be filled. He will be greatly missed… but he lived by faith that we will all be together again.

Pallbearers serving will be Kenneth Hardy, Patrick Nethery, Chuck Bailey, Bradley Lovell, Lamar Rash, and Kevin Greathouse.

Honorary pallbearers serving will be Men of the Men’s Sunday School Class at Ephesus Baptist Church, and Men of Ephesus Baptist Church, Jimmy Strong, James “Tator” Cox, Gerald Corbell, Lane Chambers, and Clint Chambers.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to Gideon’s International, 50 Century Blvd., Nashville, TN, 37214.

Mary Lou Lout, 70, of Center, passed away Monday, January 11, 2021, in Center.

A funeral service will be held at 10:00 a.m., Saturday, January 16, 2021, at Watson and Sons Funeral Home with visitation beginning at 9:00 a.m.  Bro. Andy Wilson and Bro. Dathan Triplett will officiate.  Interment will follow at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center.

Pallbearers will be Cody Russell, Garret Hill, Matt Arnett, Taylor Talavera, Brad Windham, John Phillip Windham, Michael Windham, Chuck Bussey, Darren Wiggins, and Rodney Williams.

Honorary Pallbearers will be Richard
Tomlin, Kinnie Adams, Kenneth Lout, Juan Salavador, Mike Lengl, and David Hailey.

Born November 15, 1950, Mary Lou is the daughter of the late Malcolm Lee Bussey and Mattie Lou Steele Bussey.  She was a member of Center First United Pentecostal Church in Center.

She is survived by her children, Susan Penick and husband Brandon of Center, Joanna Birdwell and husband Del of Center, and Charlie Lout and wife Rachel of Nacogdoches; grandchildren, Mallory Russell and husband Cody, Morgan Hill and husband Garret, Bethany Arnett and husband Matt, Brynna Birdwell and boyfriend Taylor Talavera, Levi Birdwell, Aidan Lout, Keaton Lout, and Maddox Lout; sister-in-law, Linda Dreyer of Center; numerous cousins, nieces, and nephews.

She is preceded in death by her husband, Howard Lout; parents, Malcolm Lee Bussey and Mattie Lou Steele Bussey; sister, Barbara Windham; brother, Charlie Mac Bussey; father-in-law and mother-in-law, Maxie and Ruby Lee Lout; sister-in-law, Lucretia Bussey; and brother-in-law, John Dean Windham.

Mary Lou attended Center Public schools, the Hockaday School in Dallas, and graduated in May of 1969 from Center High School. She met the love of her life, Howard Lout, soon after and they married on December 23, 1969. Except for a short time attending Stephen F. Austin State University in Nacogdoches, they made their home in Center, Texas where they reared three children.  After 50 years of marriage, Howard was called home this past April. She missed him greatly and joined him in Heaven on January 11, nine months to the day later.

Mary Lou was a gifted writer, putting her talents to use in her chosen profession as a journalist. She worked at the East Texas Light Newspaper, the Light and Champion, and the Shelby Countian. She was widely known for her storytelling, photography, and her ability to turn a business idea into an eye-catching newspaper ad. Her REAL claim to fame, however, was her long-running humor column, “Off the Wall.” Described as part Erma Bombeck, part Andy Griffith, her column was enjoyed far and wide as she related the hilarity of her family and community’s everyday life as only she could.

As co-owner of Lout Furniture Showrooms, or  “The Sunshine Place” as it was better known, her signature color, yellow, became evident in everything she touched - yellow furniture store, yellow Lincoln Mark 5, yellow delivery trucks for the furniture store. She liked those happy colors!

Later in life, she taught 5th and 6th grades at Christian Learning Center and Center Christian Academy.

Her most cherished title by far was the one of “Mammy” (as she was known to her grands.) She was immensely proud of each one and their accomplishments. She left her grandkids with treasured memories and a wonderful legacy. When she found out that she would be promoted to “Great Grand Mammy'' in April of 2021, she was over the moon. No doubt, her little Mooter would have been spoiled ROTTEN.

She loved spending time with family, especially on trips to the beach. She loved being AT the beach, not necessarily ON the beach.

She gave her life completely to Jesus at Campti Pentecostal Church and more recently attended Center First United Pentecostal Church where she was involved in various ministries over the years.

In her own words:

“The most important things in my life are my Lord, my church, my family, and my friends. I always loved to find humor in everyday situations and believe that ‘a merry heart doeth good like a medicine’.”

James Alan Johnson

James Alan Johnson, was born in Center, Texas on July 15, 1948 to John “Johnie” Thomas Johnson and wife Maxine Williams Johnson.  Alan attended Center High School where according to the stories, he really enjoyed life.  After graduation, Alan began his career as a brick mason.  He married Bettye Walker Johnson on July 3, 1975, and together started their family and business, Johnson Masonry.  Alan was a member of Sam Samford No. 149.

Bettye and Alan lived in Center, Texas where they reared four children, Leigh, Lauri, Clint, and Callie. As the kids grew up, Alan made sure that each of them knew how to use a gun and introduced them to horses.  Although shooting and riding were not in Leigh and Callie’s repertoires, Alan and Bettye worked together so that each child excelled in their own interests.  If one asked about Alan’s parenting style, “We rode horses and shot guns; we did it always!”

As the kids grew older, Alan picked up roping.  He traveled across the southern United States with his son Clint and friends roping and conversing.  It is hard to find a person in the cowboy world who has not heard a story told by Alan Johnson.  His love for tales carried out into the deer hunting world.  The son-in-laws, grandsons, Clint, and hunting friends would all agree that “What is told at the deer lease, stays at the deer lease!”  Interestingly, when customers remember Mr. Alan, they too remark on his company’s skill with bricks, but always remember his stories.  I am sure it is the stories that helped him connect to God and be saved.

On January 2, 2021, James Alan Johnson ended his story but not his legacy in Nacogdoches, Texas surrounded by family and friends.  He was preceded in death by his parents: John “Johnie” Thomas Johnson and Maxine Williams Johnson; brother: John Keith Johnson.  He is survived by his wife: Bettye Walker Johnson; daughters: Leigh Johnson Clopton and husband Kevin Clopton of Gunter, Texas; Lauri Johnson Sisk and husband Aaron Sisk of Center, Texas; Callie Alane Morton and husband Jeremy Morton of Whitehouse, Texas; son: Clint Johnson and wife Donna Johnson of Nacogdoches, Texas; brother: Stephen “Steve” Gary Johnson and wife Renee Manning Johnson of Marlin, Texas; sister-in-laws: Cecile LeBlanc Johnson of Denton, Texas and Mary Jones Walker of Center, Texas; grandchildren: Bryce and wife Abby Clopton of Sanger, Texas; Braiden Clopton of Gunter, Texas; Camryn and husband Aaron Blankenship of Yukon, Oklahoma; Mackenley Johnson of Nacogdoches, Texas, Khloe’ Johnson of Nacogdoches, Texas; Allison Johnson of Nacogdoches, Texas, Grayson Mortan and Cade Mortan of Whitehouse, Texas, and numerous nieces and nephews across the United States.

Graveside service will be held at 2:00 p.m., Monday, January 4, 2021, at Oaklawn Memorial Park in Center with Bro. James Goodwyn officiating.

Pallbearers will be James Colton Hairgrove, Dillion Ward, Trey Byrnes, Zach Moore, Leonardo Escelante, Jason Griffin, Bryce Clopton, Braiden Clopton, and Donnie Moody.  Honorary pallbearers will be Charles “Billy” Cook, Claude Lucas, and Don Moody.

In lieu of flowers, memorial donations can be made to Panola College Rodeo, 1109 W. Panola, Carthage, Texas 75633.
