Local Sports Round up 5/16/14

It’s the quarter-final round of the state baseball playoffs.

In Class 2A, the Garrison Bulldogs will play Groveton in a best-of-three series beginning at 7 p.m. tonight in Palestine. Game 2 will be played at 4 p.m. Saturday, and Game 3 would follow. The winner advances to the region semi-finals to play the Rogers/Troy winner.

 

Central Heights defeats Kirbyville, 2-1 in Game 1 of their best-of-three Class 2A regional quarter-final playoff series in Nacogdoches. Game 2 will be at 7 tonight in Jasper. If needed, Game 3 would be at noon Saturday at Pollock Central. The winner moves on to play the Clifton/Salado winner.

 

In Lufkin last night, No. 1 state-ranked Douglass takes an 11-1 five-inning win over West Sabine in Game 1 of their best-of-three Class 1A regional quarter-final series. Game 2 is at 6 tonight, and if necessary, Game 3 is 2 p.m. Saturday. The winner will have the Bowie/Harleton winner in the region semi-finals.

 

Up at Waxahachie last night, Caldwell blistered Carthage, 15-1 in five innings in Game 1 of a Class 3A region quarter-final series. Game 2 is set for 2 p.m. Saturday, and Game 3 would follow. Caldwell eliminated the Center Roughriders from the playoffs last weekend. The winner has the Silsbee/Splendora series winner in the regional semi-finals next week.

 

In the softball playoffs it’s the region semi-finals,

 

Hudson is the lone District 20-3A team left. The two-time defending state champions are playing Huffman Hargrave in a best-of-three series starting tonight at 7 at Sam Houston State in Huntsville. Game 2 is 6 p.m. Saturday.

 

In Class 1A, Beckville is playing Harleton in the regional semi-final round in a best-of series in Marshall that started last night, with Harleton coming away with a 3-1 win over No. 1 ranked Beckville.

 

In another Class 1A series, Zavalla takes on Grapeland at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin with Game 1 at 6 tonight.

 

The Center Athletic Department has set a Physical Date for May 21st. All 6th Graders, 8th Graders, and 10th Graders that plan to be in any Center Athletic Program in the 2014-2015 school year will need a physical. A reminder: any other students who are not in those grades, and who do not have a physical on file need to get a physical as well if they plan to be in athletics next year. The physical will cost $20. Checks will be accepted and must be made payable to Center Athletics.

 

The 61st annual Shelby County Sheriff’s Posse PRCA Rodeo is June 6 & 7 at 7:30 each night, sponsored by Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Presale tickets are $5, and can be purchased at Boles Feed, Triple J Feed and Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Center. Kids 6 and under get in free. There will be a calf scramble each night for kids 10 and under with cash prizes. On Saturday night only, anyone wearing a western hat will receive $1 off their admission ticket at the gate. Entertainment will be provided by three different East Texas Equestrian Drill Teams. The Rustlers, the 4-8 year olds; The Young Guns, the 8-14 year olds; and The Roughriders, age 15 & up.
