Local authorities warn of scams

There are some scams going around the area that you should be aware of.

The Center Police Department is saying a scam involving a card received through the mail claiming the recipient could receive "$100 in gift savings" for use at Wal-Mart or Target is making the rounds. There's an 855 number printed on the card asking the receiver to call and claim $100. However, the person answering the call is asking for the caller's debit or credit card information. The Center Police Department says if you received such a card, to contact them at 598-2788.

Also, Shelby Savings Bank is warning customers and citizens of a new scam they became aware of Tuesday. According to Jeremy Fenley, Vice President, Chief Information Officer, a person is making phone calls claiming to be from a satellite service of the bank. The caller-id shows the phone number 936-591-0179 which is a phone number from Shelby Savings North Branch. The bank advises the person is not affiliated with Shelby Savings Bank and to use caution and don't give out personal or financial information to the caller.

In addition, the Nacogdoches Police Department is warning citizens of a telephone scam, where the caller identifies himself as a lieutenant with a Nacogdoches County or District Court. The person then tells the victim they owe money on a warrant or find and demands money be paid following their specific instructions. Nacogdoches law enforcement has asked the public not to give information to the caller and hang up immediately.
