Mahmood recants on plea, fires attorney, wants trial

After saying he would enter a guilty plea to conspiracy to commit healthcare fraud last week, word now from the U.S. Attorney’s office is that former Shelby Regional Hospital owner, Dr. Tariq Mahmood wants to retract the plea and proceed with a trial by jury, with a new attorney. At Monday’s hearing in Tyler Federal Court, Mahmood asked for a 90 day postponement to allow his new counsel time to prepare. The motions must be approved by U.S. District Judge Michael Schneider. Mahmood was indicted on healthcare fraud and additional counts involving allegations that he altered codes underlying $1.1 million in billings to Medicare.
