Local Sports Round up 5/13/14

We’re down to the quarter-final round of the state baseball play offs, and our local teams are just about out of the picture. However, there are some area teams still vying for state championships.

 

In Class 2A, the Garrison Bulldogs will play Groveton in a best-of-three series beginning at 7:30 Friday night in Palestine. Game 2 will be played at 4 p.m. Saturday, and Game 3 would follow. The winner advances to the region semi-finals to play the Rogers/Troy winner.

 

Central Heights and Kirbyville will begin a best-of-three series at 7 Thursday night at SFA, with Game 2 at 7 Friday night in Jasper. If needed, Game 3 would be at noon Saturday at Pollock Central. The winner moves on to play the Clifton/Salado winner.

 

In Class 1A, West Sabine will play No. 1 state-ranked Douglass in a best-of-three series starting Thursday in Lufkin at Morris Frank Park. Game 1 is 6 p.m., with Game 2 at 6 Friday, and if necessary, Game 3 is 2 p.m. Saturday. The winner will have the Bowie/Harleton winner in the region semi-finals.

 

As for Class 3A, Carthage will take on Caldwell in a best-of-three quarter-final series in Corsicana beginning Thursday night. The opening game is 7:30, with Game 2 at 2 p.m. Saturday, and Game 3 would follow. The winner has the Silsbee/Splendora series winner in the regional semi-finals next week.

 

In the softball playoffs,

It’s down to the regional semi-finals, and Hudson is the lone District 20-3A team left. Hudson will meet Hargrave this week.

 

In Class 1A, Beckville will play Harleton in the regional semi-final round, and Zavalla takes on Grapeland.

 

After receiving some 37 offers from Division I schools seeking his football talent, Nacogdoches football standout, Jaylon Lane has verbally committed to play at Oklahoma State. The 6-2, 185 pound junior said Oklahoma State was one of the first schools that recruited him before he blew up.

 

The 61st annual Shelby County Sheriff’s Posse PRCA Rodeo will be June 6 & 7 at 7:30 each night, sponsored by Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep. Presale tickets are $5, and can be purchased at Boles Feed, Triple J Feed and Wright Chrysler Dodge Jeep in Center. Kids 6 and under get in free. There will be a calf scramble each night for kids 10 and under with cash prizes. On Saturday night only, anyone wearing a western hat will receive $1 off their admission ticket at the gate. Entertainment will be provided by three different East Texas Equestrian Drill Teams. The Rustlers, the 4-8 year olds; The Young Guns, the 8-14 year olds; and The Roughriders, age 15 & up.
