Local Sports Round up 5/12/14; Shelbyville & San Augustine Tracksters Fare Well at State

Several local track athletes have brought home medals from the UIL state track and field meet held Friday and Saturday in Austin. The Shelbyville Lady Dragon 1600-meter relay team captured the gold with a time of 4:03.94, winning by .03 of a second. The state champion mile relay team members are Stephanie Cartwright, Adaisia Cartwright, Jakyra Ross and Cleosha Jeter. Also, San Augustine’s Anwar Davis is the Class 1A state champion in the 100 meter dash with a time of 10.74.

 

Other state track and field medal winners include the Timpson boys’ 800-meter relay team that took third. Members are Terence Garrett, Shakar Johnson, Eric Gossett and Devonta Thompson. Both San Augustine girls’ relay teams that qualified for state came home with hardware as the 800-meter were silver medallist and the 400 meter finished third. The team includes Ve’Shun Lacy, Latavia Edwards, Jazmine Watts and Ky’Ashlyn Price. Price also took silver in the 200 meter dash. As a team, the San Augustine girls’ finished in a three-way tie for second place with 36 points. The San Augustine boys’ 400-meter relay just missed medalling, coming in fourth. Garrison girls’ 110-hurdler Jasia Berry was also able to grab a bronze.

 

In the state baseball playoffs, the Center Roughriders and Joaquin Rams were both eliminated over the weekend.

 

The Center Roughriders were knocked from the Class 3A state baseball playoffs, as Caldwell swept the best-of-three area championship series. Caldwell took an 8-3 win Friday in Madisonville, and closed out the series with a 2-1 win Saturday at Pollock Central. Caldwell moves on to play Carthage in the region quarterfinal round. It took Carthage three games to beat West and advance.

 

The Joaquin Rams’ season came to an end Saturday, as West Sabine took the Class 1A area championship best-of-three series in Nacogdoches in back-to-back games. West Sabine came away with a 4-1 in nine innings Friday, and took the series with a 7-4 win Saturday. West Sabine advances to play Douglass in the region quarter-final round this week.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs will advance in the Class 2A playoffs after sweeping Elysian Fields. Garrison rallied for a 5-4 win Friday night, and took a 6-4 win on Saturday. Garrison will meet Groveton in the quarter-finals. By the way, Garrison pitcher Kaleb Kirk has signed to play baseball at Centenary College in Shreveport.

 

Central Heights is headed to the quarter-final round of the Class 2A playoffs after win their best-of-three area series in two games, 7-6 and 4-2. Central Heights will now play Kirbyville.

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs had their season come to close as Woodville came back from Friday’s 3-1 loss, to take two games Saturday, 16-8 and 9-4, in a Class 2A region quarter-final series in Lufkin. Woodville moves on to play Salado in the region semi-finals.

 

The Center High School Athletic Awards were presented Thursday night and named as recipients of the annual R.E. Malone Award were Rider Kiounis Williams and Lady Rider co-winners, Jasmine Crawley and Jayson Cassell.

 

The Timpson ISD Athletic Banquet is planned for 6:30 p.m., tonight, Monday, at the Good Hope Baptist Church Family Life center. The tickets are $10.00 in advance and $20.00 at the door. Student athletes will attend free of charge.
