Local Sports Round up 5/9/14; Riders in Pursuit of Area Championship

The Joaquin Rams’ Class 1A area championship baseball series with West Sabine in Nacogdoches was postponed last night, and will be played starting tonight at 6. Game 2 is planned for 2 p.m. Saturday, and Game 3, if necessary, will follow. The series winner moves on to play the Douglass/Dallardsville Big Sandy winner in the region quarter-finals.

 

The Center Roughriders will meet Caldwell in a Class 3A best-of-3 area championship series starting at 7 tonight in Madisonville. Game 2 will be at 2 Saturday in Pollock Central, and if needed, Game 3 will follow. The series winner has the winner of the Carthage/West series in the region quarter-finals next week. Center Broadcasting will have Rider playoff action on Q-100 KQBB as Don Wall handles the play-by-play.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs will play Elysian Fields in a Class 2A area round series in Marshall at East Texas Baptist University. Game 1 is at 7 p.m. tonight, with Game 2 at 3 p.m. Saturday, and if necessary, Game 3 will follow. The series winner has the winner of the White Oak/Groveton game in the quarter-final round.

 

Central Heights will take on Tatum in a Class 2A area round best of series starting at 7 tonight in Henderson. The series winner meets the Kirbyville/New Diana winner in the region quarterfinal round.

 

 

In the softball playoffs:

 

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs have a Class 2A region quarterfinal best-of-three series against Woodville scheduled to start at 7 tonight at Morris Frank Park in Lufkin. Game 2 is at 4 Saturday, and if necessary, Game 3 would follow. The winner moves on to the region semi-final to play the winner of the Bruceville-Eddy/Salado winner.

 

Center will be the site for a Class 1A girls’ softball quarterfinal series when No. 2 state-ranked Beckville clashes with Cushing starting today, weather permitting. A double-header will start at noon. If necessary, Game 3 is 3 p.m. Saturday.

There’s a number of local athletes taking part in the UIL state track and field meet in Austin today & Saturday hoping to bring home gold medals and the title as best in Texas.

 

San Augustine state qualifiers include: Tia Barnes in the girls’ shot put; Ky’Ashlyn Price in girls’ long jump and 200-meter dash; and Anwar Davis in the boys’ 100-meter dash; in addition to the girls’ 400 & 800-meter relays (Ve’Shun Lacy, Latavia Edwards, Jazmine Watts, Ky’Ashlyn Price), and the boys’ 400 & 800-meter relays (Dez Randle, Jarvis Smith, Jamikel Roberts, Anwar Davis)

Shelbyville state qualifiers are: Bailey Robalais (Rab-a-lay) in he girls’ discus; Mikel Carter in boys’ pole vault; Emma Walker in the 1600-meter run; and the girls’ 1600-meter relay (Stephanie Cartwright, Adaisia Cartwright, Jakyra Ross, Cleosha Jeter)

Timpson state qualifiers include: Mack Hamilton in the boys’ 800-meter run; and the boys’ 800-meter relay (Terence Garrett, Shakar Johnson, Eric Gossett, Devonta Thompson)

In Class 2A, Garrison’s Jasia Berry in the girls’ 110 hurdles; Willie Rogers in high jump; Taylor Webb in girls’ pole vaulting; and Lacy Lee in girls’ discus.
