Sen. Nichols, Rep. Paddie Issue Comments on Sabine County Issue

State Senator Robert Nichols and State Representative Chris Paddie have both issued comments after learning TxDOT has asked a Sabine County property owner to remove a sign from their her property containing the Ten Commandments.

Jeanette Golden’s home is near State Hwy. 21, and she was issued a letter recently by the state agency or she would be fined. Senator Nichols said he was greatly disturbed when he learned of the situation. He said freedom of speech, freedom of religion and the protection of property rights or at the center of the issue. Senator Nichols had been in direct contact with TxDOT leadership, and encouraged the agency to reevaluate their decision and work towards a solution.

According to TxDOT, the sign is believed to not be in compliance with the Highway Beautification Act of 1965, which is tied to Federal funding and regulates billboard signs.

Rep. Paddie said the situation is a classic example of governmental overreach. He added his office is committed to working with TxDOT to quickly resolve the situation.
