The Shelbyville Lady Dragon softball team opened the state playoffs in Nacogdoches last night with a convincing 13-1 bi-district win over Carlisle. Shelbyville will face Zavalla in the area round with the site, date and time to be determined.
Up the road in Central Heights, the Timpson Lady Bears found the going much tougher, as Cushing takes a 9-3 win, to lead the Best- of-Three bi-district series, 1-0. It’s do or die for Timpson this afternoon, as Game 2 will start at 3:30 at Nacogdoches High School. If necessary, Game 3 would be at 4:30 Monday at the SFA Field. The series winner will play Evadale in the area round.
The Garrison Lady Bulldogs continue into post-season, much as they finished district, with a win. Garrison defeats Hemphill, 18-3, in the first game of their Best-of-Three bi-district series. Game 2 will be at 7 tonight in Central. The series winner will play the Sabine/Elysian Fields winner.
In baseball, it's win or stay home for the Center Roughriders, as they host Central in the regular season finale tonight at Roughrider Field. Center is 5-6, a half-game back of Jasper in the standings. Jasper had finished their regular season. A Rider win would force a district playoff game for a seed in the state playoffs. First pitch is 7, and its also senior night for the Riders as a pre-game ceremony will be held at 6:45 to honor the 2014 seniors.
The Joaquin Rams will be the third-place team in the state playoffs from Dist. 21-1A, and will enter post-season later next week. Joaquin will play Tatum at 6 tonight in a warm-up game in Tatum. Joaquin's bi-district opponent will be decided after this weekend.
The Garrison Bulldogs complete Dist. 19-2A play last night with a 3-0 win over Groveton. Garrison takes second place in the district and will open the playoffs with a home-and-home series against Hemphill. Garrison will host Hemphill at 7 p.m. on Thursday before traveling to face them at 7 p.m. on Friday. If a third game is needed, it will at 2 p.m. Saturday in Hemphill.
Playing their final games of the season tonight will be Shelbyville at Mt. Enterprise, Tenaha at Douglass, and San Augustine is scheduled to be at Chester for the Wolves final baseball game of the season.
Regional track and field meets are scheduled for today and Saturday as there a good representation of local athletes hoping to make it out to state in two weeks. Center qualifiers will be taking part in the Class 3A Region III meet in Humble; the Class 2A Region III meet that includes Garrison athletes is in Whitehouse; and the Class 1A Div. I meet’s in Palestine with qualifiers from Timpson, Tenaha, Joaquin, Shelbyville, Martinsville and San Augustine taking part. The top two finishers in each event advance to the state track and field meet May 9 & 10 in Austin.
