Surveillance Video Backs Up Claim of Murder in San Augustine County Incident

San Augustine County Sheriff’s Department investigators say the man whose body that was found in the rubble of his burned out home last month, was murdered and they say a surveillance video is backing up that claim. Chief Deputy Gary Cunningham is hopeful that video will help lead them to the suspect. On the night of March 17, the body of 62-year old Kavy Neil Sowell was found after firefighters extinguished the blaze at the home on County Road 3200. Sowell had been reportedly shot in the head three times before his house as set on fire, which investigators say was to cover up the murder. Chief Cunningham says the surveillance video shows a tall white male walking towards Sowell’s trailer house, and minutes later, the same individual is seen walking away from Sowell’s residence. He says the timeline of events of the person shown in the video match up with the time Sowell was shot. It’s reported Kavy Neil Sowell was a gun collector, and according to a neighbor, may have possibly had a land dispute with another individual. If you have any information about this case, authorities are asking for you to please call the Lufkin Crime Stoppers hotline at (936) 639- TIPS.
