Good Friday observance brings closures to governments, schools, businesses

Today is Good Friday, a religious holiday observed primarily by Christians commemorating the crucifixion of Jesus Christ and his death at Calvary. Good Friday is not a government holiday at the federal level; however, individual states, counties and municipalities may observe the holiday. Good Friday is a state holiday in Texas & Louisiana. The postal service operates, and banks regulated by the federal government do not close for Good Friday. Shelby & San Augustine County Courthouses, along with most city governments in both counties are closed today. In addition, all Shelby County school districts are observing the day, with the exception of the Tenaha ISD, which has classes as scheduled. In San Augustine County, the San Augustine ISD will have school today, with an early release at 1 p.m.
