Sabine County: Annual Gaines-Oliphint Pioneer Trade Day Saturday

If you're a Texas history buff, enjoy heritage, or just looking for an outing tomorrow, the 10th annual Gaines-Oliphint Pioneer Trade Day will be held in Sabine County, at Pendleton Harbor. Hosted by the James Fredrick Gomer Chapter of the Daughters of the Republic of Texas, the Gaines-Oliphint House is the oldest known hand hewn log house in Texas at 196-years old, and is the only surviving structure of the Gaines-Oliphint Ferry Settlement. It's also on the National Register of Historic Places. Gates open at 9 tomorrow morning and admission is free. There will be a wide variety of vendors, displays, and musical entertainment all day. Lunches will be available, and there's arts and crafts, quilting, soap making, weaving, carving and blacksmithing. Also, Dr. George Avery from SFA will be on hand to date bottles, so guest are invited to bring their antique bottles for dating. All proceeds will go to the restoration of the Gaines-Oliphint House. The house is located in the Pendleton Harbor Subdivision just off Hwy. 21 east of Milam, close to the Pendleton Bridge. Turn left onto Cedar Grove Road at the Pendleton Harbor sign and looks for the signs and Texas Flags showing the way.
