Local Sports Round up 4/18/14; Riders @ Jasper Tonight, must win

The Center Roughriders are on the road tonight to Jasper in a key Dist. 20-3A match-up. The Riders are 4-5, while Jasper's a half-game up on Center at 5-5. A win puts the Riders in fourth place with two games remaining, and into a position to grab a possible post-season berth. Carthage leads the standings at 8-1, Hudson is second at 7-3, and Diboll's in third at 5-4. First pitch for JV is 4:30, followed by the varsity.

 

Last night, in Dist. 21-1A baseball,

 

The Timpson Bears get back-to-back-to-back home runs as they take a 9-8 win over Martinsville. Tanner Murdock, Colton McSwain and Keaton Bush all had home runs in helping the Bears improve to 8-7 on Senior Night. Timpson will be at Joaquin Monday to wrap up their season.

 

Joaquin was idle last night, but the Rams have clinched a playoff berth and are in third place in District 21-1A.

 

No. 1 state-ranked Douglass crushed Mt. Enterprise, 22-3. Douglass has won the district championship and is 15-0.

 

Today’s action has Tenaha at Cushing to play the second-place Bearkats.

 

Shelbyville-Chireno?

 

Tonight in Dist. 23-1A, Brookeland will be at San Augustine, and it's Senior Night for the Wolves.

 

Dist. 19-2A last night, Garrison takes an 11-1 win over Woden, as the Bulldogs are 9-2, in second place behind Central Heights. Garrison will hosts Groveton next Thursday.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders will conclude their season tonight at Jasper. Center is 1-10.

 

Shelbyville and Timpson softball teams are in the playoffs. The Lady Dragons will play Carlisle at 6 next Thursday at Nacogdoches High School in a one-game bi-district playoff; while the Lady Bears take on Cushing in a Best of 3 game bi-district series starting next Thursday. Game 1 will be at 4 p.m. at the SFA field, with Game 2 at 3:30 Friday at Nacogdoches High School. Game 3, if necessary, will be played at 4 Monday at the SFA Field.

 

Last night, the Garrison Lady Bulldogs take a 6-1 win over Woden to finish district play at 12-0. Garrison will enter the state playoffs next Friday against Hemphill. Garrison plays a warm up game against Huntington at 6 p.m. Tuesday in Huntington.

 

The Class 3A Area Track & Field Meet was held Wednesday in Carthage, and as a team, the Center Roughriders finished sixth with 45 points, with Carthage taking the team title with 109 points; and the Lady Riders were 10th with 12 points, and Carthage also picked up the girls’ title with 145 points. Rider Jemarcuss Jones won the Boys Triple Jump to advance to the regional meet; Jamie Hubbard was third in the Boys 100m; and the Rider 4x100 Relay was third. The Regional Meet is April 25 & 26 in Humble with the top finishers receiving a trip to Austin.

 

Success is breeding a possible outside offer, so is the word at SFA, as ESPN reported Thursday that men’s basketball coach Brad Underwood met with representatives of Marshall University in West Virginia, and his name has been mentioned at Tulsa University. After the most successful season in the program’s history, Underwood is being courted, if you will for another head coaching job. The SFA Lumberjacks had a 29-game winning streak during the season, losing to nationally ranked UCLA in the NCAA Tournament.

 

The 36th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Angler’s Take A Kid Fishing Tournament, is just three weeks away, on Saturday, May 10 at Huxley Bay Marina on Toledo Bend. Sign-ups are underway for the free event, which is for kids 3 to 15. Entry forms are available at Center Broadcasting, Huxley Bay Marina, Scarber’s Grocery, and Trail’s End & RV in Huxley, First Bank and Trust East Texas in San Augustine, or Hometown Tackle in Center.
