Campbell Clears the Air: Says He Had No Influence on County Road Paving

At the Shelby County Commissioners' Court meeting Monday, Wayne Stolz of of Stolz Engineering addressed the court to explain that work on the nine county roads that benefitted from the $2.6-million Ike 2.2 Hurricane Ike Grant monies were well ahead of schedule and should be completed soon. During this time, County Judge Rick Campbell took the opportunity to "clear the air" in regards to reports that he used his influence to have County Road 3046, which leads into the Bone Hill Foundation, paved. Just before last month's party primary election, local businessman Fred Borders purchased air-time on Center Broadcasting Company stations saying Ike money was used for this county road, and the job was influenced by Judge Campbell's relationship with the foundation.

Judge Campbell said he wanted to make it, quote, "crystal clear", he had no influence in what roads were chosen.

Judge Campbell said he did use his relationship with Gov. Rick Perry to save $132-million of the Ike grant money that Harris and Galveston Counties wanted to take away that were earmarked for the 12-county DETCOG region.

Stolz said each county precinct received equal square yards of road improvement.

In other items of interest, Tom Trussell, who lives on CR 2650 at Shelby Beach came before the commissioners to voice a concern about a neighbor's property, which he said was an "eyesore and a health hazard". He asked the court to look at the possibility of instating a county ordinance, or having a county official serve as a part-time compliance officer for such matters. Judge Campbell told Trussell that he would be speaking with Sheriff Willis Blackwell and Attorney Gary Rholes in regards to having a possible ordinance in regards to the clean-up of private property in the county, and a deputy or other officials that would help enforce such an ordinance.

Commissioners also voted to transfer almost $1.2 million in unencumbered unspent cash balances to the cash on hand/carryover account.
