Spring Man Pursued by Louisiana Authorities, Shot

DeSoto Parish officials are reporting a Texas man who led law enforcement officers on a high speed pursuit from DeSoto Parish was shot twice early this morning after jumping from his vehicle and pointing a gun at deputies. Sheriff Rodney Arbuckle said 48-year old Terry Leroy Smith of Spring was taken to University Health with gunshot wounds to the leg and foot. The deputies who fired the shots, one from DeSoto and one from Caddo, were not injured. The pursuit started around 1 this morning after a DeSoto Parish Sheriff's Office deputy spotted a vehicle at an oil well location on Hwy. 510 south of U.S. Highway 84 east of Mansfield. The deputy wanted to check out the driver because of the number of thefts that occur at the well locations. The driver sped away from the scene before the deputy could make contact. The chase entered Red River Parish and eventually Caddo Parish before authorities were able to stop the vehicle about 5 miles north of I-220. When Smith jumped out, slipped, rolled and had a gun pointed at deputies, Sheriff Arbuckle said. At least six shots were fired, with two hitting Smith, before he was subdued. The truck Smith was driving was stolen out of Texas and had switched license plate. The two deputies reportedly were following policy and procedure.
