Butterfly Release Part of Saturday's Bloomin' on the Square

The 4th Annual Shelby County Bloomin’ on the Square will be held this Saturday. The event will be from at 9:00 a.m. till 1:00 p.m. on the downtown Center historic square, and will feature a number of exhibits, how-to demonstrations, displays and plants.  For the third year, the Shelby County Children's Advocacy Center will host a "Butterfly Release" at 11 a.m.

April is Child Abuse Awareness Month, and Advocacy Center Executive Director Denis Merriman says 300 butterflies will be released by children to signify child abuse awareness locally.

The Shelby County Children's Advocacy Center encourages you to help them spread the word that there is no excuse for child abuse? Did you know 1 in 4 girls and 1 in 6 boys will be sexually abused before turning 18? Only one in 10 will tell someone. Sadly, 90 percent of child victims know their abusers. Talk to your children about abuse, personal boundaries and staying safe.

Other events planned for children Saturday will be Create-A-Critter’s "Princess and the Frog Tea Party at 11:30, with multiple settings. Plus, CASA of Deep East Texas will have an exhibit of the children's poster contest at the historic courthouse, plus they’re holding their “March against Child Abuse” at 10 a.m. starting at their office at 131 Porter St.

The Shelby Beautiful Clean's Bloomin' on the Square from 9 to 1 Saturday in downtown Center.
