Joaquin will be sending a good representation to the Class A Regional Tennis Tournament at SFA April 16 & 17, after performing well at the Dist. 21A Tennis Tournament last week. The Joaquin boys took the overall District Tennis Championship. The final medalist and regional qualifiers are: First place boys’ singles-Jimmy Smith, 2nd place Saul Ruiz. Boys’ doubles-1st place Josh Darnielle and partner Lewis Blount. Second place-Justin Kennedy and partner Colby Hamilton. Girls’ doubles-2nd place Dalayna Daw and partner Maci McDaniel. Mixed doubles-2nd place Ryan Hanks and partner Samantha Cheatwood.
Other medalist included: Mixed doubles-3rd place Patrick Freeman and partner Jaz Atkins. Girls’ doubles-4th place Megan McGee and partner Ashlyn Broadus. Girls singles-4th place Kaietlyn Scruggs.
Timpson Middle School hosted the Dist. 21-1A Track & Field Meet yesterday with Joaquin taking two of the four team championships. The Joaquin 7th grade girls won their division with 129 points, Timpson came in second with 117; and Tenaha third with 110 points. The Joaquin 7th grade boys also picked up the team championship with 195 points to 174 for Shelbyville; and Martinsville in third with 61 points. The boys’ 8th grade championship with to Timpson with 196 points; followed by Joaquin in second with 165; and Shelbyville with 116 points. The Tenaha 8th grade girls claimed first with 167 points; Joaquin was second with 136; and third went to Shelbyville with 115 points.
Varsity and JV high school track and field meets are taking place Wednesday & Thursday. The District 20-3A meet is in Carthage; the District 21-1A meet in Shelbyville; San Augustine is hosting the Dist. 23-1A meet Wednesday, and the Dist. 19-2A meet is in Crockett.
Checking the district baseball standings:
Carthage and Hudson are battling it out atop 20-3A, as both are knotted at 6-1; while Jasper's in third at 4-3, with Diboll in fourth at 3-3. The Center Roughriders and Central are at 2-5 in fifth, and Huntington is 1-6.
The Riders will see if they can put together some momentum as they travel to Diboll tonight, starting with JV at 4:30.
In District 21-1A, No. 1 state-ranked Douglass is out front at 11-0, with Cushing in second at 9-2, a half-game ahead of the Joaquin Rams at 8-3. The Timpson Bears are in fourth at 6-5, after yesterday’s 14-4 win over Chireno, in a make-up game from March 29.
Today's games have Tenaha at Joaquin, Timpson at Douglass and Shelbyville at Martinsville.
The District 23-1A race has state-ranked Colmesneil on top at 7-0, with state-ranked West Sabine a game back at 6-1, Broaddus is 5-2, while Zavalla is 4-3. The San Augustine Wolves are 3-4.
San Augustine will go to Zavalla tonight, and Broaddus takes on Brookeland.
It's a close race in District 19-2A, as Central Heights is on top at 7-1, followed by Garrison at 6-2, Groveton is 5-2, and Crockett is 4-3. Garrison has won its last five in-a-row and will be at Crockett tonight.
As for softball:
The Center Lady Riders are 0-9 in Dist. 20-3A, and are in Diboll today.
Dist. 21-1A, No. 1 state-ranked Beckville is undefeated, with the Timpson Lady Bears and Shelbyville Lady Dragons tied for second at 6-3, with the Joaquin Lady Rams a game back at 5-4. Three teams advance into post-season.
Today, there’s a big game, as Shelbyville goes to Timpson. Also, Joaquin will be at Martinsville.
The Garrison Lady Bulldogs are 9-0 and lead Dist. 19-2A. They'll be at Crockett tonight.
