Major Accidents Reported Saturday on Hwy. 7 West of Center

There were a couple of major injury-accidents reported Saturday on Hwy. 7 west of Center. The first occurred shortly after 1:30 Saturday afternoon; about a mile from Loop 500 when a Mitsubishi Eclipse driven by 21-year old Abreia Smith of Louisiana was headed eastbound, and she reportedly fell asleep, crossed Hwy. 7, struck a culvert and became airborne, and then struck a tree. Ms. Smith was ejected from the vehicle and taken by Life Air Rescue to University Health Hospital in Shreveport with unknown injuries. DPS Trooper Dustin Ramos investigated the accident.

The second accident at 6:30 Saturday evening took place near the county line at Grigsby when a Dodge pickup headed east on Hwy. 7, and according to witnesses, was being driven erratically by 48-year old Steven Dennis of Shelbyville, went across the center line into the wrong lane of traffic. In an attempt to avoid mishap, 22-year old Taylor Spinks of Etoile, was westbound in a Chevrolet pickup, went into the eastbound lane. That’s when Dennis crossed back onto the right side and the two vehicles collided. Spinks’ pickup overturned onto its top and both vehicles came to rest off the roadway. Spinks was pulled from his pickup by passing motorist, with Dennis being removed by emergency personnel. Both men were taken by ambulance to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital for treatment. DPS Trooper Jimmy Faulkner reports the incident in under investigation with possible DWI charges pending.
