REVISE: Local Sports Roundup; Center Golfer Advances to Region

The Center Roughrider golf team just missed earning a trip to the regional tournament after placing third at the district event held Wednesday and Thursday at Neches Pines in Diboll. The Riders placed third as a team, behind first place Carthage and Hudson in second. Rider Beau Buster Byrnes did qualify for region, coming in sixth overall with a two-day total of 171.The sophomore shot an 83 during Wednesday’s first round, and came back with an 88 Thursday. Other team members are Austin Craig, Rex Kirkley, Justin Renfro and Zack Ritter.

 

The Center Roughriders attempt to dig out of the bottom of the Dist. 20-3A baseball standings tonight when they host second place Hudson. Center is 2-4, while Hudson is 5-1. Action begins with JV at 4:30. Entering play today, Carthage leads the district at 6-0, Hudson is second, Diboll and Jasper are tied for third at 3-3, Central is tied with Center for fifth, and Huntington is 0-6.

 

In Dist. 21-1A, the state’s No. 1 ranked team, Douglass is 9-0, while the Joaquin Rams are in sole-possession of second at 8-2, having put together a 7-game win streak. Cushing is 7-2 in third, the Timpson Bears are 5-4, while the Shelbyville Dragons are 2-6, and Tenaha is 1-7. Big showdown tonight as Joaquin is home to play Douglass. On Saturday, Mt. Enterprise will be at Timpson, and Tenaha goes to Martinsville. The Shelbyville Dragons have a bye.

 

In a game earlier this week, Douglass shuts-out Shelbyville, 5-0.

 

Baseball in Dist. 23-1A today, the San Augustine Wolves are 3-4, having won three of their last four games. S.A. is scheduled to be in Burkeville. State-ranked 6-0 Colmesneil and 5-1 West Sabine lead the district standings. Broaddus and Zavalla are 4-2, Chester and Burkeville are 1-5, and Brookeland is 0-5.

 

In Dist. 19-2A, the Garrison Bulldogs get a big win, as they beat state-ranked and district leading Central Heights last night, 5-2. The win gives Garrison a 5-2 district record. The Bulldogs host Woden Saturday.

 

Softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders are home to play two-time defending state champion, and district-leading Hudson tonight. Center is 0-8.

 

In Dist. 21-1A, No. 1 state-ranked Beckville is undefeated, with a three-way tie at 5-3 between Timpson, Joaquin and Shelbyville. Today, Timpson goes to Martinsville and Chireno goes to Joaquin.

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs take a 15-0 win over Central Heights last night, to remain undefeated at 9-0.

 

The Shelbyville track teams are scheduled to take part in the Spring Hill Meet on Saturday.

 

The District 21-1A Jr. High Meet will be Monday in Timpson.

 

Sign-ups are underway for the 36th annual Center Broadcasting-Shelby County Bass Angler’s Take A Kid Fishing Tournament, to be held, Saturday, May 10 at Huxley Bay Marina on Toledo Bend. The free event is for kids 3 to 15.
