Sabine County Fisherman Dies Following Boating Mishap

Yesterday’s windy weather has reportedly led to a boat capsizing and the death of a Sabine County fisherman on Toledo Bend Reservoir. Shelby County Sheriff Willis Blackwell tells us his department responded to the Ragtown Park area just after noon to the report of a capsized boat and possibly two stranded fishermen. Sheriff Blackwell says the deceased fisherman is identified as 63-year old Ronald Clegg of Bronson, who possibly passed out from exposure after spending more than two hours in 50 degree water. The sheriff says Clegg, along with 49-year old Kenneth White of Pineland, were trot lining, and were up against a stump, when the choppy water with approximate 3-and-a-half foot waves, slammed the vessel into the stump, causing the boat to capsize. Sheriff Blackwell says the older man, who was wearing a life jacket, clung to the stump, while the younger was able to hold onto the boat. White told officers he decided to try and paddle with the boat back to shore, while Clegg made the decision to stay put. It took White some two hours to cover the approximate 300-yard trek back to land, and said he saw his Clegg clinging to the stump when he arrived. However, soon afterwards, Clegg apparently passed out. White was able to call family members and 9-1-1 from a cell phone that had been underwater the entire time. Sheriff Blackwell said by the time they got boats in the water and made it to Clegg he was deceased. JP Pct. 2 Bert Furlow was called to the scene and pronounced Ronald Clegg deceased. Texas Parks & Wildlife Game Wardens are conducting the investigation into the incident.
