Grill Fest Barbecue Cook-off Happening Saturday

Don’t be alarmed if you see a smokey haze rolling over Hurst Street Saturday, its all part of the first Shelby County Grill Fest Barbecue Cook-off--"Chillin' & Grillin' taking place at the Windham Civic Center.

 

Barbecue teams are vying for over $67-hundred in prize money, and trophies. The cook-off is sanctioned by the Lone Star Barbecue Society and will feature three cooking categories, according to Chairman Mark Ivey. The Pork Spare Ribs competition is sponsored by Specter, Inc., the home of T/R's Steaks and More and Endless Possibilities Catering. The Chicken cook-off category is sponsored by Tyson Foods, and the Brisket showdown is sponsored by Center Livestock Auction, Co.

 

The day's events will begin at noon for spectators. Entries will be accepted for the Washer Pitching Contest, sponsored by Shelby Savings Bank. An outdoor Show & Shine Classic Car exhibit will be hosted by the Shelby County Cruisers. The crowd will be entertained with live music presented by Farmers State Bank beginning at 3 with Danny Paul Windham and the Pine Hill Review, followed at 6 by the Ashton Hill Band.

 

The 42 tournament will begin Friday night, March 21 at 7 p.m., with the finals on Saturday, sponsored by Covington Lumber & Construction. The tourney will be in Foster Hall at the Civic Center.

 

The fun-filled day is assisted by Pitmaster Sponsors Liberty Tax Service, Texas State Bank, East Texas Poultry Supply, Impressions Advertising, 4C Electrical Services, Ray Jones Chevrolet and McAdams Propane.

 

Tasting samples from Grill Fest will be shared at 5 p.m. in Foster Hall. An all-day, come and go pass is $10. An awards presentation will follow with category sponsors presenting prize checks and trophies.

 

Tickets and t-shirts are available in Center at Center Glass, Hughes Florist, Elite Hair Design and Center Health and Harmony.
