Local Sports Round up 3/21/14; Locals Going for Power Lifting Gold

The Texas High School Power Lifting state meet will be held tomorrow in Abilene, and six local lifters are hoping to medal. Four Center Roughriders will be participating, including Kiounis Williams, Garrett Stanley, DeVincent Hoyt and Zach Verhalen; while Shelbyville’s Kal Metcalf will also be there. In addition, Adam Mason of Joaquin will be a state alternate.

 

Center High School Freshmen Octavious Evans has been recognized by 24-7 Sports Recruiting Services as one of the top ten freshmen football players to watch in the State of Texas. The 6-foot-2, 175-pound Evans finished last season with 67 receptions for 734 yards, and scored eight touchdowns. He also saw significant time on defense. He will be one of the top playmakers in East Texas this coming season despite the fact he will only be a sophomore, according to the recruiting service.

 

 Baseball Today:

 

The Center Roughriders are on the road to Huntington with JV first pitch set for 4:30, varsity at 7. The Riders are 0-2 in Dist. 20-3A, just ahead of last place Huntington, who’s 0-3. Hudson is atop the standings at 3-0, while Carthage and Diboll are 2-0, and Jasper and Central are 1-2.

 

Dist. 21-1A Baseball: 2-2 Shelbyville at 3-2 Timpson; Martinsville at 3-2 Joaquin; 0-4 Tenaha at Chireno; and #12 Cushing tangles with top-ranked Douglass in Cushing-both teams are undefeated. 

 

In Dist. 23-1A, it’ll be a game between two teams looking for their first wins, as 0-3 San Augustine is at 0-2 Brookeland. Broaddus and Colmesneil are on top of the standings at 3-0; West Sabine and Zavalla are 2-1; and Burkeville is 1-2. Chester is 0-2.

Dist. 19-2A: 1-2 Garrison at 0-3 Palestine Westwood. Central Heights is leading the pack at 4-0 with Groveton at 3-0; Crockett & Elkhart are 2-1; and Woden is 0-3.

 

Softball today:

 

The Center Lady Riders are back in action today as they head to Huntington in search of their first District 20-3A win. The Lady Riders are 0-4.

 

Other games scheduled today, in Dist. 21-1A, Chireno at 3-2 Timpson; 4-1 Joaquin at district-leading and No. 1 state-ranked 5-0 Beckville; 3-2 Shelbyville at Martinsville; and in Dist. 19-2A, 4-0 Garrison at Palestine Westwood.

 

The SFA Lumberjacks will take on Virginia Commonwealth at 6:30 tonight in San Diego in the first round of the NCAA men's basketball tournament. The game is being telecast on TruTV. If the ‘Jacks win tonight, they will face the winner of the UCLA and Tulsa game in the second round of the tournament.

 

Last night in Nacogdoches, the SFA Ladyjacks take a 59-51 win over Texas State in the first round of the Women’s Basketball Invitational. The winner advances to play the Boise State-Grand Canyon winner.

 

The Timpson Bear Band March for Music 5K run will be Saturday beginning at 9am in So-So Park in Timpson. The fee will be $25 with a shirt included. Just to purchase a shirt it will be $15. You can register tomorrow morning from 8am-9am and the fee will be $15 without a shirt. All proceeds go to the THS Bear Band.
