Local Sports Round up 3/17/14; Brown, Hagler Win Silver

Two Shelby County power lifters brought home hardware from the Texas High School Women’s Power Lifting Association State Meet held last Friday in Corpus Christi. Joaquin’s Chole Brown and Shelbyville’s Harlie Hagler were silver medalist in their respective weight classes. Brown totaled 375 pounds lifted in the 105-pound division, and Hagler ended with 800 pounds in the 181-pound division. Also placing was Jessica Sanford of Shelbyville, who finished 8th in the 225+ weight class. Congratulations to these young ladies!

 

At the Region III Division 2 Texas High School Power Lifting Association Meet held March 6 in Rusk, the Center Roughriders took first place out of 28 teams participating. Center also qualified four lifters for the state meet to be held this Saturday in Abilene. They include: Kiounis Williams, first in the 198-pound division; Stanley Garrett, second place in the 165-pound division; Devincent Hoyt, second in the 220-pound division; and Zach Verhalen, second in the 275-pound division.

 

In addition, Shelbyville’s Kal Metcalf will be participating in the state power lifting meet this week. Metcalf was second in the region March 1 in Elkhart.

 

Baseball Friday:

 

The Center Roughriders take a tough loss in District 20-3A action, a 3-2 decision to the state-ranked Diboll Lumberjacks at Roughrider Field. The loss drops the Riders to 0-2 in district, while Diboll is 1-0. In other district action Friday, it was Hudson over Huntington, 3-1; and Jasper beats Central, 2-0.

Center has a bye Tuesday, and will return to action Friday at Huntington.

 

In San Augustine, the Wolves took a thumping from the state-ranked West Sabine Tigers, losing 21-1. Broaddus shut-out Zavalla, 4-0 Friday. San Augustine is now 0-2, and will be at 2-2 Broaddus Tuesday night.

 

Meanwhile, the Tenaha Tigers and Martinsville Pirates had plenty of offense, Martinsville just had a little more when the final out was made, as the Pirates take a 19-16 win over the Tigers. Tenaha is 0-3 and will host 2-2 Timpson Tuesday.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs came up short in their district game with Crockett on Friday, losing 5-4. Garrison is 1-2, and will be idle Tuesday, and travel to Palestine Westwood Friday.

 

Tuesday’s baseball schedule also includes: Joaquin at Shelbyville,  the Rams are 2-2, and Dragons 2-1 in district.

 

The Texas High School Baseball Coaches’ state rankings came out last week, and Douglass remains the No. 1 team in Class 1A, while West Sabine has moved to No. 9. In 2A, Brock is the top team; College Station remains No. 1 in 3A, with Diboll No. 6; Corpus Christi Moody is on top in 4A; and the 5A top team is Southlake Carroll.

 

Softball on tap Tuesday:

 

The Center Lady Riders have a bye, and will return to action Friday at Huntington; Meanwhile, Joaquin will be at Timpson; Shelbyville at Gary; and Garrison has a bye.

 

The Center Roughrider Golf Team is playing at Neches Pines Country Club in Diboll today, while the Lady Rider golfers will be playing there on Tuesday.

 

The Center Roughrider and Lady Rider soccer teams will wrap up the regular season Tuesday night. The Riders go to Jacksonville, while the Lady Riders are home against Jacksonville.

 

The SFA Lumberjacks won the Southland Conference Men’s Basketball Championship Saturday night with a 68-49 decision over rival Sam Houston State. The Jacks improve to 31-2 on the season were rewarded a 12-seed from the NCAA Tournament committee, and will play Virginia Commonwealth in the first round in San Diego on Friday. The will play the winner of UCLA and Tulsa in the second round.

 

The SFA Ladyjacks could not complete the Southland sweep on Sunday, falling in the championship game of the Southland Conference Tournament to Northwestern State by the final score of 62-44. After winning their first regular season conference championship since 2010, the Ladyjacks could not win the conference tournament and get to the NCAA Tournament for the first time since 2006.
