Shelby, San Augustine Counties Favor Republican Primary

Shelby County Clerk Allison Harbison, who’s also the county election administrator has provided the balloting information from the Tuesday, March 4 Party Primary Election and Shelby County was definitely "Red", which was to be expected with two county-wide races in the Republican Party Primary, the county judge and treasurer, that resulted in the winner as being the candidate elect. In Shelby County, 85 percent, or 3,304 of the 3,897 voters that cast their ballots did so in the Republican Primary. Overall, 27 percent of the county's 14,362 registered voters came out.

In San Augustine County, Election Administrator Deborah Woods advises 1,286 voted in last week's party primary, that's 21 percent of the 6,064 registered voters. Of that number, 859 voted Republican, or 67 percent. There will be a run-off election on May 27 for the Republican Party County Commissioner Pct. 4 position between Steve Bryan and David McEarchern (McKatherine) as neither candidate was able to come away with a clear majority. Bryan had 138 votes to 128 for McEarchern in the four candidate field that pulled in 354 voters.

Former State Rep. Wayne Christian is also involved in a run off in May, as he'll face off with Ryan Sitton for the Republican Party nominee for State Railroad Commission.

The last day to register in time for the runoff is April 28; and early voting runs from May 19 through May 23. Remember, if you voted in a party primary, you can only vote in that same party's runoff. If you did not vote in the March 4 Primary, you may still vote and can vote in the runoff election for either party.
