Local Sports Round up 3/10/14

The Center Roughriders won one of four games played at the Hallsville Builders Baseball Tournament. Center opened Thursday with a 4-1 loss to Pleasant Grove, beat Mt. Pleasant in Friday’s first game, 7-4, lost to Spring Hill, 8-6, and lost to Pittsburgh, 9-5 Saturday.

 

The Riders will open district tomorrow night at Hudson.

 

The Garrison Bulldogs went 2-for-2 at the Kirbyville Tournament getting wins over Hampshire-Fannett and Beaumont Ozen, while losing to West Orange-Stark and Port Arthur Memorial.

 

In other district baseball games Tuesday, the Joaquin Rams go to Douglass; Cushing at Timpson to play the Bears; the Tenaha Tigers at the Shelbyville Dragons; Zavalla at the San Augustine Wolves; and the Garrison Bulldogs go to Central Heights.

 

In softball:

 

The Center Lady Riders are off until Thursday when they go to Hudson to play the defending state champs. Last Week in District 20-3A play, the Lady Riders lose to Carthage, 10-4 on Tuesday, and to Central on Friday.

 

Last Friday, the Joaquin Lady Rams get 17 runs in the bottom of the third to take an 18-3 run-rule win over Gary. The assault was led by Fallin Jackson’s three-run homer. The Lady Rams are 1-0.

 

State-ranked Beckville run-ruled the Timpson Lady Bears Friday, 15-0 in four innings. Timpson is 1-1, while Beckville goes to 2-0.

The Garrison Lady Bulldogs are 2-0 in district after a 5-1 win over Groveton Friday.

 

Softball today: the Timpson Lady Bears head to Shelbyville to play the Lady Dragons.

 

Tuesday: Joaquin goes to Chireno; Garrison at Central Heights, and Martinsville will be at Timpson.

 

The UIL crowned the new boys’ state basketball champions Saturday in Austin. Ponder beats Tatum in the 2A Final, 65-56; Mumford over Muenster, 63-57 in the 1A, Div. 1 championship game; and Water Valley over Laneville, 68-44 for the 1A, Div. II title. Dallas Madison defeats Houston Yates for the 3A title, 82-70; and Dallas Kimball comes away with the 4A; and Galena Park North Shore grabs the 5A championship.

 

The SFA Lumberjacks ended Southland Conference play Saturday with an 18-0 record, defeating Central Arkansas, 85-61. In addition, SFA extended their home winning streak to 33, and season win streak to 26 games. SFA will enter the Southland Conference Tournament in Katy as the No. 1 seed, and play at 5 p.m. Friday.
