Local Sports Round up 3/4/14; Shelbyville Power Lifters Headed to State

Four Shelbyville High School power lifting athletes are headed to state competion. Sophomore Kal Metcalf placed 2nd at the Regional Power lifting Meet last Saturday in Elkhart, and will be competing in Abilene March 22.  Kal lifted 250 lb. Squat; 310 lb Bench; 510 lb Dead Lift. Also, Lady Dragons Sophomore Jessica Sanford and junior Harlie Hagler will compete at the Girls State Power lifting Meet in Corpus Christi on March 14. Savannah Talbert will be an alternate.

 

Center 4H member Konner Windham placed 8th in the Houston
Livestock Show and Rodeo Young Guns Skeet Shoot this past weekend. Konner shot an 82 out of 100 on Friday and a 71 out of 100 on Saturday to place 8th.  She won $250, a plaque, shell bag, and a Belt Buckle. There were 400 contestants and 131 4H and FFA members. Also participating from Center were Tory Davis and Jacob Locke.

 

The Panola Ponies basketball team is playing in the N-J-C-A-A Regional Finals at 8 tonight against Kilgore at UT-Tyler.

 

Panola College inducted 5 new members to the Athletic Hall of Fame last month, including Joaquin product, Don W. Bounds who played baseball at Panola College from 1960-61; and San Augustine native Steve Winfield, who suited up for the Pony's baseball team from 1976 to 77. Also inducted were Todd Haney, Mildred Hodge Griffith, and James Gray--a three sport standout in Carthage. The ceremony was held with a large crowd of family and friends on hand.

 

Baseball games scheduled today, weather permitting: It's the district openers, as the Joaquin Rams host Cushing; the Timpson Bears go to Chireno; Elkhart at the Garrison Bulldogs; non-district, Woden at San Augustine.

 

The Douglass at Shelbyville Dragons games scheduled for today has been cancelled.

 

Softball district games today, depending on the weather: The Center Lady Riders at Carthage; Timpson Lady Bears at Gary; Beckville at the Shelbyville Lady Dragons; Elkhart at the Garrison Lady Bulldogs; and the Joaquin Lady Rams have a bye.

 

The Center Roughrider JV Tennis Team will be playing in the Jacksonville Tournament on Thursday. The event was rescheduled from today due to weather.

 

The Center Middle School Track Meet in Carthage to have been held Monday has been rescheduled for Thursday, March 6th beginning at 3:30 P.M. There will be no field events, RUNNING ONLY.

 

Soccer tonight: The Rider and Lady Riders teams have district games against Nacogdoches. The Riders go to Nacogdoches and the Lady Riders are home.

 

The Lady Rider golf team is scheduled to play in Elysian Fields today.
