The Tenaha Tigers and San Augustine Wolves have both made it to the Class 1A, Div. I Region 3 Basketball Tournament at Tyler Junior College. The No. 7 state-ranked Tigers take an 81-78 win over No. 4 ranked Dallardsville Big Sandy in Tyler last night, and will meet the state’s No. 2 ranked team, Grapeland at 3 Friday afternoon in the region semi-finals. Grapeland beat Kerens, 88-70.
Meanwhile, No. 10 ranked San Augustine knocks-out Alto, 72-65 in Huntington last night, and will tangle with No. 6 ranked LaPoynor at 5 o’clock Friday in the other semi game. LaPoynor moves on with a 78-59 win over Waco Meyer. The Region 3 Final is at 3:30 Saturday in Tyler, with the winner heading to the state tournament in Austin next week.
In Class 2A Regional Quarterfinal basketball last night, No. 1 Kountze beats Crockett 77-70; and No. 2 Tatum over Central Heights, 56-54. At the Region III Class 2A tournament Friday in Nacogdoches, the semis will have Kountze playing Jarrell at 5, followed by Tatum and Marlin at 7.
Shelbyville High School has five students advancing to the Regional Powerlifting Qualifiers Meet this week. Colton Brown, Kal Metcalf, Jessica Sanford, Savannah Talbert and Harlie Hagler qualified for the Regional Powerlifting Meet. The Lady Dragon Powerlifters will compete tomorrow in White Oak, while the Dragon Powerlifters will compete on Saturday in Elkhart. The team is lead by Coach Gary Alford and Coach Michael Taylor.
In softball, the Center High School is hosting the Lady Rider Tournament Thursday thru Saturday with 16 varsity and JV teams to participate. Competition is a pool format, with games at the High School Field, as well as the new City Softball Complex.
In other softball action Thursday through Saturday, the Timpson Lady Bears are in the Longview Tourney; and the Garrison Lady Bulldogs are taking part in the A&M Consolidated Tournament in College Station.
The Center JV Rider baseball team swept a double-header from West Rusk Tuesday, winning 17-4 and 9-0.
Baseball on tap Thursday, the Center Roughriders are in the Kilgore Oil Belt Classic through Saturday; the Joaquin Rams are taking part in the Douglass Tournament; the Timpson Bears are in the Waskom Tournament; and the Garrison Bulldogs are playing in the Elysian Fields tournament today through Saturday.
The JV Rider baseball team is in the Central Heights Tournament.
Panola College welcomes Dr. Layton Revel, founder and director of the Center for Negro League Baseball Research, for a program at noon, Tuesday, March 4, in the Murphy Payne Community Room of the M.P. Baker Library on the Carthage campus. He’ll speak about the undiscovered history of the Negro Baseball League. A light lunch will be served for the first 50 visitors attending. High school track and field meets start Thursday. The Center Roughriders and Lady Riders will be in Crockett; with Timpson Bears and Lady Bears go to Colmesneil. The Tenaha Tigers and Lady Tigers are scheduled to be in Elysian Fields; and the Garrison Bulldogs and Lady Bulldogs are taking part in the Alto Relays.
The Center Roughrider JV Tennis Team will be in the Nacogdoches Tournament Thursday.
