Local Sports Round up 2/25/14; Tenaha, S.A. Playing for Region Tourney Berths

A former Carthage High School football player and Texas A&M defensive lineman was arrested last Saturday night on possession of marijuana.  19-year old Isaiah Golden was taken into custody at a Bryan apartment complex. It’s the school’s policy to immediately suspend a student-athlete after an arrest pending further investigation. Golden graduated Carthage High School in 2013 and started six of 11 games he played last season. If convicted, Golden faces up to 180 days in jail and a find up to $2,000. He has been released on $2,000 bond.


In boys' high school basketball playoff action tonight its regional quarterfinal action:

 

The Tenaha Tigers take on Big Sandy at 6 at Wagstaff Gym at Tyler Junior College. The winner advances to the Region III Tournament this Friday and Saturday in Tyler. The Tenaha/Big Sandy winner will play the winner of tonight's Grapeland/Kerns game in Fairfield in the region semis at 3 Friday.

 

The San Augustine Wolves are also a game away from the region tournament as they meet Alto at 7 tonight in Huntington in the region quarterfinal round. The winner has the winner of tonight's Waco Meyer/LaPoynor game being played in Corsicana. That semi would be at 5 Friday in Tyler.

 

In a Class 2A region quarterfinal tonight, Tatum takes on Central Heights at 7pm @ Whitehouse High School.

 

In a Class 3A third-round game last night, Mexia beats Central 78-56 in Huntsville, as the last District 20-3A team exits the playoffs. Mexia advances to the regional tourney in Huntsville Friday.

 

Two members of the Center High School Lady Rider Power lifting Team are advancing to regional competition this Saturday in Cradall. Juniors Rylee Hudspeth and Rachel Andrews have both qualified for the meet. Hudspeth competed in four meets this year, including lifts totaling 670 pounds at the Center Meet. Andrews is the team leader, ranked number 6 in the region. She also attended four meets this season, with a season best 750 pounds at the Diboll Lumberjack Power lifting Invitational. Other Lady Riders that competed well this season include Brianna Suell, Rosa Castillo and Chelsea Lawrence.

 

Baseball action scheduled today, weather permitting: Beckville at Timpson; and Garrison at Hemphill.

 

Softball today: Colmesneil at Center; Timpson at Mt. Enterprise; Shelbyville at Joaquin for the start of district; and Woden at Garrison for the district opener.

 

Soccer tonight: the Center Roughriders will at Diboll for a district match, while the Lady Riders host Diboll.

 

San Augustine ISD Athletic Director Donald Hubbard has released the San Augustine Wolves 2014 football schedule, and the Wolfpack opens up Aug. 29 at Garrison, with the first home game on Sept. 5 against Splendora, then a trip to Episcopal School of Dallas, head to Groveton on the following week, and finish non-district at home Sept. 26 with Homecoming against Hemphill. An open date on Oct. 3 is followed by the start of District 10-2A, Div. II Oct. 10 at home with West Sabine, then to Beckville, back home Oct. 24 against the Joaquin Rams, and a Halloween game at Shelbyville, and wind up the regular season on Nov. 7 at home against Cushing.
