Local Sports Roundup 2/10/14

In boys’ basketball Friday,

The Center Roughriders clinched a playoff spot with a 54-49 win over Carthage, to keep the Bulldogs’ perfect winless record intact in Dist. 20-3A. The Riders improve to 8-3, tied with Diboll for second, who lost to district leading Central, 68-53. Central is 9-2. Jasper beats Huntington, 64-49, and goes to 8-4. Central, Center, Diboll and Jasper are all assured the playoffs, the fight comes down to seeding in post-season. Tuesdays schedule has Central at Center, Carthage at Huntington and Hudson at Diboll. The Riders can have a share of the district championship with a win tomorrow night.

It’s Senior Night at Roughrider Gym Tuesday, as the senior players will be recognized prior to tip-off. The Center Middle School Cheerleaders will also be recognized at the game. In honor of their recognition, they will also be cheering on the Riders.

The District 22-1A, Div. I playoff picture is set as the District Champion Tenaha Tigers are 9-0 with an 80-37 win over Gary, and the Shelbyville Dragons sewed up the playoffs with a 64-42 win against Timpson. Meanwhile, Martinsville also claimed a playoff spot as they edge past Joaquin, 31-29. Shelbyville and Martinsville have 6-3 marks. Gary drops to 3-6, Joaquin 2-7 and Timpson 1-8. The only thing that might change in the district playoff picture would be the order of finish for runner up and third place between Shelbyville and Martinsville. Tomorrow night, the last district games have Shelbyville at Tenaha, Joaquin at Timpson and Martinsville at Gary.

The San Augustine Wolves got even with West Sabine, taking an  78-59 win, and tying up the District 23-1A, Div. I lead at 8-1. The two state-ranked teams will finish the regular season Tuesday night as San Augustine goes to intra-county rival Broaddus, and West Sabine heads to Zavalla. Should both win, and end in a tie, a district playoff game will be played Friday at Angelina College to determine seeding. Broaddus is 5-4, after Brookeland surprised the Bulldogs, 72-56. Brookeland is now 4-5. A loss by Broaddus to S.A., and a Brookeland win over Pineywoods Tuesday, would result in a tie for the third playoff spot, and require a district playoff game later this week between Broaddus & Brookeland.
