Local Sports Roundup 2/6/14

Wednesday was National Signing Day as senior student-athletes across the country made the commitment to further their education and athletic careers. Locally, the Class of 2014 included: San Augustine wide receiver Dez Randle, who signed with Trinity Valley Community College in Athens.

 

Tenaha Head Football Coach Terry Ward has been nominated to be a part of the coaching staff in the 4th Annual Heart of a Champion Bowl slated for June 14 at Tyler’s Rose Stadium. It's a bowl game set up by the Fellowship of Christian Athletes. Coaches from all over East Texas came together Tuesday, and drafted 100 senior players to participate in the game. The players will be divided up into a red team and a blue team, and Coach Ward will coach on the red team and be on the defensive side. Coach Ward says being a part of this bowl game to represent Tenaha is an honor. The rosters will be finalized and announced February 16th.

 

In girls’ high school basketball playoff news, the Tenaha Lady Tigers will take on Neches in Rusk at 6:30 pm. Monday night in a Class A, Div. 1 bi-district game. Tickets are $5.00 Adult/$3.00 Student.

 

Also, the San Augustine Lady Wolves will be playing a first round game at 6:30 Monday against Evadale in Woodville.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons have a first-round bye in the playoffs due to winning district, and won’t know their second round opponent till after tomorrow night. They’re tentatively looking to play next Friday night, Feb. 14, possibly at Angelina College.

 

Boys’ district basketball Friday night, 20-3A, Center at Carthage, Diboll going to Central and Huntington’s at Jasper. In District 21-1A, Div. 1 it’s Gary at Tenaha, Martinsville at Joaquin and Timpson at Shelbyville; and in District 22-2A, Div. 1, San Augustine at West Sabine in a key match-up, Broaddus at Brookeland and Zavalla at Pineywoods.

 

Softball scrimmage action scheduled today, the Timpson Lady Bears are to host West Sabine at 4:30. Friday, the Center Lady Riders will travel to Garrison; Waskom at the Joaquin Lady Rams; and the Shelbyville Lady Dragons at Central Heights.

 

Soccer, the Tenaha boys and girls teams will host New Summerfield at 5:30 today. Friday night, the Center Rider and Lady Rider soccer teams will open district against Diboll. The Riders are home, and the Lady Riders will go to Diboll.

 

We even have tennis, the Center Rider Varsity Tennis will be at Jacksonville (all day) Friday.

 

Shelbyville Youth Baseball/Softball Sign up has been extended to today, Thursday, February 6th from 5-8 at the Shelbyville FBC. Please make sure you are there with your child to sign up. Once the signups are over uniforms will be ordered and kids cannot be added after that takes place. THIS WILL BE THE LAST SIGNUP DATE.

 

Center Youth Baseball will have their final sign-up from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m., Friday, Feb. 7 at the Center Middle School Cafeteria. Birth certificates are required for first-time players.

 

Center ASA Softball will not have a late registration date. However if you still want to sign up your girls please call Sean Crouch 590-2754 or David Lawrence 332-5332. Sunday, February 9th will be the last day to register.
