Local Sports Roundup 2/3/14

In boys’ high school basketball action from Friday:

 

The top of the District 20-3A standings is back to a three-way tie at 7-2 as the Center and Diboll get wins. Meanwhile, Jasper loses for the second time in a week, to drop two games back of the leaders. The Roughriders beat Huntington, 57-49, and Diboll defeats Jasper, 63-44. Jasper drops to 6-4. Central had the night off and is 7-2. Hudson remains in alive in the playoff hunt with a 59-50 overtime win over Carthage.

 

Tuesday’s games will have Center at Jasper, Diboll at Carthage and Hudson at Central.

 

No big changes in the District 22-1A, Div. 1 race, as Tenaha improves to 7-0 with a 56-28 win over Martinsville. Shelbyville goes to 5-2 with a 56-48 win against Joaquin, and Timpson gets its first district win, 47-46 in double over time against Gary. The Dragons are 5-2, Martinsville 4-3, and Gary 3-4, with three games left on the district schedule.

 

The Shelbyville Lady Dragons are 9-0, clinching the District Championship defeating the Joaquin Lady Rams.

 

Tomorrow night, Timpson goes to Tenaha, Martinsville at Shelbyville and Joaquin at Gary.

 

It remains a three-team race in District 23-1A, Div. 1, as San Augustine takes out Brookeland, 115-41, improving the Wolves to 6-1; while West Sabine remains undefeated at 7-0, with a 61-33 win over Pineywoods, and Broaddus beats Zavalla, 53-40, giving the Bulldogs a 5-2 mark.

 

Tuesday’s schedule has San Augustine at Pineywoods, West Sabine at Broaddus and Zavalla at Brookeland.

 

In District 19-2A, Central Heights beats Woden, 44-32, and Crockett over Palestine Westwood, 54-24.

 

The Central Heights girls go to 31-0 on the season, beating rival Woden, 57-53 in double-overtime.

Tuesday’s games, Westwood at Garrison, Central Heights at Groveton, and Woden at Crockett.

 

Looks like we’ll get a break from the rain today, and permitting, there’s baseball scrimmages scheduled. The Center Roughriders are scheduled to be in Garrison for a 5 p.m. start. As for softball the regular season begins next week, scrimmage action scheduled today has the Center Lady Riders at Central Heights, with Nacogdoches also taking part. The Joaquin Lady Rams have a scheduled scrimmage Tuesday at Stanley.

 

Sign-ups for Center Youth Baseball will continue from 5:30 to 7:30 p.m. Tuesday, and this Friday, February 7 at the Center Middle School Cafeteria. *Birth certificates will be required for anyone whose has not played with Center Youth Baseball League before. Fees: Ages 4-6 (t-ball) $70, Ages 7-12 $85, Ages 13-14 $110. Tryouts for ages 7-12 will be at 5:30 on Thursday, February 20 and Friday, February 21 at the Center Youth Baseball Complex. *T-ball will not have a tryout. Opening day will be on March 29
