Capital Murder Trial Continues in Center

A Shelby County Jury began hearing testimony yesterday in the capital murder trial of 30-year old Shakeitha Cartwright of Center, who’s accused of beating her five-month old daughter, Keilly Hoyt to death in January of last year at her Shelbyville Street residence.

District Attorney Kenneth Florence has been presenting information from the original arrest affidavit saying the child’s body was covered with bruises, and had multiple broken bones when she was carried by ACE EMS to Shelby Regional Hospital, and later pronounced dead.

Florence called 9-1-1 dispatchers, paramedics, and an emergency room doctor, as well as Center Police officers and investigators to the stand in the opening day of testimony.

Cartwright admitted to officers in the original arrest affidavit that she had lost her temper and had been physical with the child the night of the incident. Cartwright is represented by attorney Rudy Valesquez.

The trial continues into its second day, today in District Judge Charles Mitchell’s 273rd District Courtroom.
