4-H Food and Textile Youth Projects to Begin

Does baking, learning to mix, measure and read recipes sound like fun? Would you like to learn to use kitchen gadgets, make snacks and plan meals? Are you interested in machine sewing, quilting or arts and crafts? Do you enjoy creating art, clothing or décor from recyclables? If you answered, “yes” then the Shelby County 4-H Food and Textile project is for you.

What is 4-H?

Texas 4-H is like a club for kids and teens ages 5-18, and it’s BIG! It’s the largest youth development program in Texas with more than 550,000 youth each year. Texas 4-H is part of Texas A&M AgriLife Extension Service and the Texas A&M System and the program was founded in 1908, No matter where you live or what you like to do, Texas 4-H has something that lets you be a better you! You may think 4-H is only for your friends with animals, but it’s so much more! You can do activities like shooting sports, food science, healthy living, robotics, fashion, and photography.

4-H Showcase

Please join us on October 25, 2022, at 6:00 pm to experience all about cooking and sewing. The Shelby County 4-H Food and Textile project will have a showcase on 4-H projects at the Shelby County Extension office, 266 Nacogdoches Street, Center (old elementary school building).

4-H Textile Project

Project activities include creating art and other projects from craft items, participating on a team to design a fashion piece from recyclables, and learning beginning machine sewing to make a lap quilt (sewing machines and instruction will be provided). Don’t worry if you’ve never tried these projects before! If you are at all interested, come and have fun learning and doing.

4-H Food Project

In the 4-H Food project, boys and girls, grades 3rd through 12th focus on nutrition, food safety and learning cooking and measuring skills. This year we will be learning how to can and make jams and jellies, bake delicious holiday treats, participate in a team chopped contest, and learn about setting an appetizing table.

How to Participate

Just call the Extension office and speak to Tera or Feleshia to get all the information.
