In Shelby County, there is a new Sheriff in Town. According to Sheriff Willis Blackwell, "As of Dec. 31 no one here had a job. Sheriff Blackwell had all Sheriffs Department employees reapply for their jobs. The results however has two former employees claiming discrimination played a role in their release. As a part of the rehiring process, Sheriff Blackwell assembled an interview panel to reevaluate the candidates. After the smoke had cleared, six people were released, including a woman and two African-American deputies, Lester Pitts and Curtis Archie. The releases by the Sheriff were based on the the interview panels recommendation. While no discrimination lawsuits have been filed at this time, Pitts and Archie are in conversation with human rights organizations. There are minorities in the sheriff's department working in the jail and dispatch. The sheriff says that makes the department qualify as an equal-opportunity employer.
