The Tenaha Holiday Hoops Tournament crowned two new champions Saturday, as the three-day basketball tourney wrapped up. Taking the boys’ title in the all-Class 2A match was No. 6-state ranked Kountze, with a 78-62 decision over No. 1 state-ranked White Oak. There’s also a new girls’ tournament champion, as Tatum defeats No. 2 state-ranked Lipan, 55-50. In Saturday’s other boys’ games: Class A, Div. I No. 7 state-ranked Cayuga over the Tenaha Tigers, 65-58 in the third-place game; Class A, Div. II No. 7 state-ranked Laneville squeezes by Class 2A Central Heights, 51-50 in the fifth-place game; and in the consolation game, Woden over Chireno, 53-38. Tournament organizers report great games and great crowds during the fourth-annual Holiday Hoops Tournament.

 

Even though they didn’t make the boys’ “placing” games, the No. 3 state-ranked San Augustine Wolves won 2-of-4 during the Tenaha tournament. The Wolves will host Central Heights at 1 this afternoon. Central Heights defeated San Augustine, 55-53 last Friday at the Tenaha tournament.

 

At the Woodville Tournament, the Center Roughriders won 2-out-of-3, including a 59-38 win over Corrigan on Saturday. The Riders opened play last Thursday with a 65-30 win over Hardin; and lost to tournament champion, Beaumont Kelly, 66-49 on Friday. Center will resume District 20-3A play on Jan. 8 when they host Huntington. The Riders are 0-2 in league play.

 

The Shelbyville Dragons win the consolation at the Kirbyville Tournament. The Dragons beat Anahuac (Anna-whack), 45-42 Friday to take the trophy. Shelbyville opened with a lost to Spurger, 47-56, and rebound with a win over West Hardin on Friday to make the consolation game.
