Shelby County Historical Commission News

The Shelby County Commission Historical Museum will be holding a public Auction on a rare JJE GIBSON brick. This brick was from the ones made at his brickyard that was located on Houston Street during the time he was building the Courthouse, Jail House, that is now used by the Chamber of Commerce as well as several homes in our town. The brick was made during the period from 1883 to 1885, making it approximately 134 years old. This is not the regular rectangular one but is rounded on one end, like the ones used around the windows and doors. The impression on the rounded end reads “JJE GIBSON”. The Brick is in almost perfect condition. It is mounted on an enclosed stand that would look great in any Business or Home' and something that not many people around have.

The Auction will be held at the Poultry Festival, (Oct. 5th), Saturday night at approximately 6:30, prior to the auctioning of the Chickens. This is your opportunity for a chance to win a piece of Historic Shelby County, and help out a great organization. All proceeds from this Auction will go to the Shelby County Historical Museum. Come out and show your support for a group who work daily helping keep Shelby County History alive.

We invite you to come by our Booth at the Poultry Festival and learn of all the things we have to offer. We are located on Pecan Street, directly behind the First Baptist Church.

We would like to extend a welcome to all members of the Shelby County Historical Society to come out and visit with us for a while during this year's Poultry Festival, October 3rd through October 5th. The Museum will have a booth on the square offering books and information to our community regarding Shelby County history and the Museum. There are one-hour time slots available for those who would like to volunteer and share their knowledge to our Shelby County visitors anywhere from 9:30 am to 6:00 pm, on either Thursday, Friday, or Saturday. If you only have the time just for a quick visit, please stop by and say "hi". We'd love to see you! For further information, you may call the Museum at (936) 598-3613 or you may call Terri Lacher at (936)598-3484.
