Shelby County Historical Society Meeting at the Shelby County Museum featuring guest speaker Dr. Jodi Edward Ginn.

 

The topic was "East Texas Troubles: The Allred Rangers' Cleanup of San Augustine."

The story of a rural community's extrication from the grip of a vicious criminal gang who built their power by exploiting institutionally marginalized African Americans.

In telling this story, Dr. Ginn revealed a multifaceted history of the reform of the Texas Rangers, and of an unexpected alliance between the legendary frontier lawman and black residents of the Jim Crow South. Dr. Ginn also held a book signing.
