Something a Little Different in the 2019-20 Calendar

Just a few years ago, the Texas Education Agency changed the standards in which they measured how long students were required to be in school during a school year.  In the past, students were required to attend a certain number of days regardless of how long each day lasted.  Now, the standard is very different.  In the current system, students in the state of Texas are required to attend school for 75,600 minutes in order to meet the minimum standard for a school year.

Here at Tenaha ISD we have worked very hard to tailor our calendar year in and year out to the needs of our students.  So in the spirit of providing our students with the best possible calendar to meet their needs, we have instituted what we are calling “Tiger Days” periodically throughout the calendar.  These Tiger Days occur about every other week, mostly on a Wednesday.  What is their purpose?  It’s simple.  The purpose of a Tiger Day is to stop, breathe, and catch up.  They are there to break up the monotony of the grind of school and give students a day to catch-up on work they need to do.  Teachers are not allowed to present any new material or assign any new project on these days.  They’re merely a day to catch-up.

Catching up on work is not the only purpose of Tiger Days however.  Throughout any school year there are disturbances that cause losses to class time.  Picture days, class meetings, assemblies, and many other types of activities always seem to throw a schedule off kilter.  Also, we are committed to spending dedicated time with different types of character education and working on issues that kids face day to day in life that may not necessarily fit into a course curriculum.  These shortened days where new instruction is not the focus allows a little time for the focus to shift to things that are just as important for kids (if not more) than the mundane disciplines of school.

And finally, to have a periodic day in the middle of the week where school just “ends” a little earlier?  That’s just a nice break.  And that is an element of the Tiger Days that students and staff will all be appreciative of.

In the end, a school year is a grind.  It’s a long and difficult challenge to maintain a high energy level needed.  In ensuring that our teachers have the adequate time they need to cover the depth of content they need to cover, and to ensure that our students are provided adequate time to complete what they need to, we are confident that the Tiger Days give us the best solution to all of those needs.
