The Tenaha Police Department are continuing their work to aid the citizens of Shelby County, with the establishment of a safety zone.

The safety zone is a parking area located at the Tenaha Police Department at N Bowers Dr. To provide security to the citizens of Tenaha, and other residents of Shelby County that wish to utilize the location, in addition to people passing through the area it will be monitored by cameras from different angles 24-hours a day. Captain Joey Hudnall said, "With today's society there is so much things going on myself and Chief Pope wanted to implement something that would better secure the safety of everybody."

The safety zone is the brain-child project of Tenaha Police Chief Jeremy H. Pope and Capt. Joey Hudnall. The parking spot will give people a monitored location to perform custody exchanges, make trades or purchases on items bought off of the Facebook Marketplace or other locations on the internet. This is just one project the Tenaha Police Department are working on to make our area safer. Captain Hudnall said, "We got a lot of ideas that we are going to throw out there, a lot more things that we are going to be implementing."

Warning Signs

Statement by Chief Jeremy H. Pope

In order to prevent problems that other cities and counties have experienced dealing with numerous violent crimes during private party exchanges. We at the Tenaha Police Department are taking part in the Safe Exchange Program. This program covers anything from child custody exchanges to private party transactions where citizens have agreed to meet in the process of transactions occurring on social media sites. There will be a designated parking spot with a clearly marked sign in a well-lit area that is under 24-hour video surveillance.

The Tenaha Police Department encourages anyone that is engaging in any of these activities to take advantage of the Safe Exchange Zone as a safe alternative to conduct private party transactions.
