Don't Mess with Texas Trash-off Event

LUFKIN – The annual statewide Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off campaign is scheduled in the Lufkin District for Saturday, April 6, and motorists will see groups of volunteers on the roadsides joining forces to rid Texas roads of litter.

Volunteers and about 75 Adopt-A-Highway groups will be located throughout the nine-county district supporting this litter clean-up event. Drivers are urged to reduce speed and stay alert along state maintained highways where volunteers will be located.

The Don’t Mess With Texas Trash-Off is the single largest one day cleanup event statewide. It is the litter campaign’s signature annual event that began in 1985 and has grown to be recognized as the largest litter prevention event that works to improve communities. It is part of the national Keep America Beautiful’s Great American Cleanup campaign.

“Litter is a big problem in Texas and we are fortunate in our district to have many willing volunteers who help keep our roads free of trash,” said Rhonda Oaks, public information officer. “More than 435 million pieces of litter accumulate across our state each year. Littering is illegal and those who choose to litter should be aware that fines for littering range from $500 to $2,000.”
