Shreveport Red Cross steps up

With such widespread destruction across the Northeast, the entire country, including the ArkLaTex, is pitching in to help. Nationwide, there have been at least 62 deaths as a result of Sandy. More than 6 million people were without power, and estimates on the cost of damage were in the billions of dollars.

Rescues efforts by the National Guard continued in New York, New Jersey and other states. Teams attempted to reach an estimated 20,000 people trapped by flooding in Hoboken, NJ, roughly 25 percent of the city. In response, the Shreveport chapter of the American Red Cross on Wednesday deployed an emergency response vehicle to New Jersey. Sources say the goal of the local Red Cross chapter is just to help out in any way it can. The Shreveport Red Cross team is heading to New Brunswick, N.J., which was one of the hardest hit states. Sandy forced more than 20,000 people to spend the night in Red Cross shelters across the nation. Michelle Davison of the Red Cross says the function of the vehicle "is to go out to the affected areas and to do things like mass feedings, deliver supplies, even do client work out of them." In other words, a bit of everything. The truck is mostly empty now, but they will gather supplies from a Red Cross chapter as they get closer to their destination. The Shreveport chapter expects to arrive on Friday.
