Texas higher education officials want to reduce financial aid amount

Texas higher education officials say the state could help more poor students go to college by reducing the maximum amount awarded under the state's financial aid program.  Texas Higher Education Coordinating Board Commissioner Raymund Paredes tells state lawmakers that unless they put more money into the TEXAS Grant program, they should consider allowing it to cover only academic costs, such as tuition and books.  Paredes testified before the Senate Higher Education Committee on Wednesday. He says the change would reduce the amount some students get, but would allow the program to reach more students who would not be able to afford college on their own.  Board officials say the change would have to be made by the Legislature, which reconvenes in January.
