SHELBY COUNTY – The Texas Department of Public Safety (DPS) investigated a two vehicle
major crash yesterday 9-11-18 on US 96 and County Road 4356.
The preliminary crash investigation indicates at approximately 5:45 p.m., a 2007 Peterbilt truck
tractor semi-trailer was traveling north on US 96. The driver of the truck tractor reportedly failed
to control its speed and struck a 2003 Pontiac passenger car from behind that was stopped
waiting to turn left onto County Road 4356. The truck tractor semi-trailer then overturned on the
highway.
The driver of the truck tractor is identified as 51-year-old Derek Lampkin from Lufkin. Lampkin
was transported to a Center hospital where he was treated and released.
The driver of the Pontiac is identified as 38-year-old Magdiel Cruz from Teneha. Cruz was not
reportedly injured during the crash. A passenger in the Pontiac is identified as 43-year-old
Natividad Ramirez. Ramirez was pronounced deceased at the scene. A second passenger in the
Pontiac, a 14-year-old male, was transported to Nacogdoches Memorial Hospital with serious
injuries.
This crash remains under investigation. No additional information is available at this time.
