To the voters of Shelby County, Pct. 5:

I’m announcing my candidacy for the Republican nomination for Shelby County Justice of the Peace, Pct. 5.

I was born and raised in Timpson, and have lived most of my life in the community. I’m a 1980 graduate of Timpson High School where I was involved in numerous activities, including a proud member of the Bear Band, FFA, and other organizations. I also attended Panola College and Stephen F. Austin State University.

My wife, Tammy & I are the parents of six children, and five grandchildren.
I’ve served on several community and church boards, including past president of the Timpson Chamber of Commerce, The Center Optimist Club, a Shelby County Chamber of Commerce Ambassador, Boys & Girls Club of Shelby County, and former administrative board chairman of the Timpson First United Methodist Church, in addition to being a member of the Timpson Volunteer Fire Department. I’ve recently been chosen to be on the Timpson Economic Development Corporation.

Professionally, I’ve been involved in media ownership, management, an account executive, on-air announcer and journalist for 38 years. Including publisher & editor of the Timpson-Tenaha News and The Shelby Countian newspaper, as well as Center Broadcasting and other radio, TV and newspaper companies in Texas and Louisiana.

My wife is office administrator for M&M Insurance in Center, San Augustine, Hemphill and Nacogdoches.

My purpose in seeking the J.P. position is simple. I believe that public service is incumbent on all of us and we need to give back when possible. I also feel one should always be proud of their hometown and community. Serving as your J.P. would be an honor!

My parents, Charlotte, and the late Forest Broadway instilled those traits in me, and their long-time work-habits and dedication continue to inspire me. My mother has worked in Timpson continuously for 66 years, and has been at the City of Timpson the past 34. My dad began several businesses in Timpson, and inspired a number of young men and women to pursue their dreams, and always to be respectful, honest and fair.

Current J.P. Pct. 5, Michael Crouch has decided to not seek re-election. He has served the office with diligence, and I commend him for his service.

It’s my intention to provide full-time fair, honest, dependable and respectful J.P. services to the Timpson community, with dedication to the position set forth by Judge Crouch, and former judges Jim Powers, and the late Bruce Samford, Sr., Robert Billingsley and others.
I will work with Timpson and Shelby County law enforcement and other county officials, as well as the City of Timpson and Timpson ISD to insure Texas laws are upheld through the justice process.

I intend to receive the proper state training and be fully certified for the J.P. position before taking office in January 2019. I’ll also receive continuing education as needed.
Again, I stress I will be a full-time J.P. with regular office hours, and available to the public as needed.

I encourage anyone with questions or comments to call me at 936-591-1939 or email me tallen979@gmail.com.
