Caddo-Bossier OHSEP planning WNV defense

The Caddo-Bossier Office of Homeland Security and Emergency Preparedness met Tuesday afternoon to discuss a joint effort to combat the threat of the West Nile virus. While no decisions about spraying were made, OHSEP Director, Sandy Davis said it was still beneficial. Each Parish would have to approve and provide funding for aerial spraying to kill mosquitoes. Caddo Mosquito control estimates it would cost about $45,000 to cover 70,000 acres they have identified. The meeting follows discussions at Monday night's Caddo Parish Commission meeting highlighting concerns raised in light of the recent rise in West Nile cases in the region. As of August 17th, Caddo has seen 9 cases so far this year. Six of them have been the more serious neuroinvasive form of the virus. Bossier has reported 5, but only one of them is the neuroinvasive form. Webster Parish has reported 2 cases. DeSoto and Nathcitoches Parishes have reported 1 case each. The Louisiana Department of Health and Hospitals has not confirmed any deaths in northwest Louisiana from the virus.
